How to Fillet Northern Pike - Removing the Y-Bones
I just hate all the bones I always have to pick out of the meat." I've met many a fisherman who love to catch northern, but many -- including myself for a long time -- don't know how simple it is to remove those nasty y-bones.
This requires a very shallow cut, since the rib cage on a northern does not go deeply into the fish as it does in a walleye.
The long side of the y- bone runs into the fish and towards the dorsal/back side.

 Wisconsin Muskie Fishing
"Clear Lake was chosen for the 45-inch and 50-inch size limits mainly because of its track record, though we didn't have a lot of information before the 45-inch minimum length limit went into effect in 1991," said John Kubisiak, a DNR fisheries biologist in Oneida County.
According to Kubisiak, the lake's large size, ciscoe forage base and low-density muskie population are conducive to producing trophy-class fish.
The 50-inch minimum length limit on Clear Lake muskies is a relatively new management tool, and though it is too soon to say how much of an impact it will have on the fishery, expectations are running high.

 Mud Lake 1
After securing permission from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to use an eight inch post hole digger, I set out with a close friend, Greg Chesack, to find the clay layer at the east end of the ditch that the historical record claimed was under a three foot layer of peat.
Should the bones be located (and historical information does not tell us which side of the ditch - north or south) we would then begin a block excavation along either side of the ditch.
As these bones are removed, they will be kept in a wet state until replacing the water volume of the bones with conservationally appropriate consolidants properly treats the bones.
