Topic: Bone bed

Bone bed - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the best-known of these is the Ludlow Bone Bed, which is found at the base of the Downton Sandstone in the Upper Ludlow series.
Another well-known bed, formerly known as the Bristol or Lias Bone Bed, exists in the form of several thin layers of micaceous sandstone, with the remains of fish and saurians, which occur in the Rhaetic Black Paper Shales that lie above the Keuper marls, in the south-west of England.
A bone bed has also been observed at the base of the Carboniferous limestone series, in certain parts of the south-west of England.

 Bonfire Shelter-The Archeology-Bone Bed 1
One is that Bone Bed 1 is concentrated in the central, interior part of Bonfire Shelter and is not present at the south end adjacent to the talus cone where both of the upper bone beds are concentrated.
Bones from all four species were found close together and in apparent association with one large limestone block (somewhat larger than a basketball) and several smaller ones.
The range of bone elements present, leg and feet bones, skull and teeth fragments, and various vertebrae, suggest that the entire carcass was once in the shelter.

 Bonfire Shelter-The Archeology-Bone Bed 2
Bone Bed 2 is the complex deposit of bison bones dating to at least 11,300 years ago (9300 B.C.), during Paleoindian times.
The upper surface of Bone Bed 2 parallels the modern surface of the shelter and is covered by 4-8 ft (1.2-2.4 m) of cave sediments and cultural layers including Bone Bed 3 and the Fiber Layer.
Bone Bed 2 is thickest (about 1.5 ft or 46 cm) at the foot of the steep slope of the talus cone (directly beneath the cleft in the cliff above) and gradually thins to the north and toward the rear of the shelter.

Bone Metastasis Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Bone metastasis or "bone mets" occurs when cancerous cells from the primary tumor relocate to the bone.
Bone metastasis to the long bones of the arms and legs can cause pain with activity and occasionally that pain can be relieved with rest.
Bone metastasis patients frequently have bones that are more fragile and care is needed when performing daily activities.

 Ancient Amphibians Discovered in Iowa
The bone bed occurs in the middle of a unique sequence of rocks which were deposited in a depression formed within the flat-lying limestones and shales of the upper St. Louis Formation.
Above the bone bed is a sequence of bedded limestones and minor shales containing fish remains, ostracodes and snails, but lacking fossils suggestive of normal marine conditions.
The bone bed and associated sediments were deposited during a time interval after the regression of the St. Louis seas, but prior to the transgression of the seas which deposited the younger Pella Formation.

A Visit To The Sharktooth Hill Bone Bed, Southern California
It helped to watch for the dark-brown fragmental bones of sea mammals embedded in the pale-gray matrix of the Round Mountain Silt; these were the most common finds in the Sharktooth Hill bone bed exposures, although the perfectly preserved shark teeth remained the prized items sought by the majority of visitors.
The incredible bone bed was evidently preserved along the southeastern edges of the sea in waters no deeper than about 200 feet--an estimate based on the presence of fossil rays and skates, whose modern-day relatives prefer such relatively shallow depths.
Perhaps favoring this explanation is the fact that many of the vertebrate remains from the bone bed reveal obvious signs of wear and tear, suggesting some degree of transport and agitation prior to their eventual burial.

Five were found in the Cliff End Bone Bed, a part of the Ashdown Beds, and the remainder in the Paddockhurst Bone Bed, a part of the Grinstead Clay.
Loose blocks of bone bed containing the new mammalian fossils were, however, collected from the wave-cut platform and the shingle; most were found within 100 yards of the foot of the cliff.
Because no bone beds could be found cropping out in the area, it is assumed that all the loose blocks were derived from the intermittently exposed Cliff End Bone Bed described by Allen.

Buena Vista Museum Of Natural History - Sharktooth Hill Article, Bone Appetite
The area we know now as rural northeast Bakersfield was once home to them all, and when they died, their bones and teeth came to rest in compacted beds that run through 400 acres in the hills west of Round Mountain Road owned by Ernst and excavated daily by the retired, 60-year-old fossil collector.
Moreover, the same bone beds that are yielding remains of sharks, sea lions, whales and dolphins are yielding bones and teeth from many species of land mammals, including elephants, camels, horses and deer.
Ernst has loosened about a 15-foot section of bone bed and within minutes, the quest for the unusual has swept over the newcomers, who, following their mentor's lead, are now chucking aside shark teeth and 20-pound chunks of whale vertebra in hopes there'll be something more significant in the vicinity.

Recently, Clifford Miles and his associates at the American Museum of History, re-opened the AMH fossil collection of the Bone Cabin Quarry, using modern techniques and knowledge to describe the fossils, including a new genus, Gargoyleosaurus.
