Simultaneously a much-revered tradition and a colourful riot of a celebration, it is centred on Bonfire Night - or "the Fifth" (November, of course) - in Lewes.
Bonfire does a very good job of taking the sting out of the onset of Winter, and even makes you look forward to dark evenings and cold nights.
But I'd have to add that I know plenty of "Bonfire Girls" who clearly get something out of Bonfire (!), and let's face it, little boys and girls are lucky enough to benefit from Bonfire and Christmas, courtesy especially of more family-orientated Bonfire Societies such as Barcombe and Neville (website yet to be found).

Lewes Bonfire Council - History of Bonfire
It is certain that in Elizabethan times the accession of the Queen was commemorated by public bonfires on 17th November each year, and perhaps this made a significant contribution in her successor's reign to the later national celebration of "Guy Fawkes Night" (though it is never properly known by this name in Sussex!)
After 1906, however, when the local authority banned street bonfires on the Fifth, the Societies were forced to find open fields on the town's outskirts.
It is not for nothing that the unofficial motto of Sussex (of which Lewes is the County Town) is "We won't be druv!" The major act of remembrance nowadays is that for the dead of the two World Wars, each Society in turn laying a wreath at the War Memorial.

Bonfire Night is celebrated across the UK on 5 November.
Meanwhile, Guy Fawkes and friends, having formulated their plan, known as the 'Gunpowder Plot', had rolled 36 barrels of gunpowder into the cellars of the Houses of Parliament, and were waiting for the king to arrive when guards broke in and arrested them.
In these first bonfires, called 'bone fires' at the time, it wasn't an effigy of Guy Fawkes that was burned, but one of the Pope.

Bonfire's pyrotechnic satire of 1980s New York wasn't just Wolfe's best book, it was the best bestselling fiction debut of the decade, a miraculously realistic study of an unbelievably status-mad society, from the fiery combatants of the South Bronx to the bubbling scum at the top of Wall Street.
Tantalizingly fascinating, The Bonfire of the Vanities is a deeply detailed and yet enthralling account of the entwining ways in which the forces of opportunistic politics, ugly racism, greedy Wall Street, gullible public sentiments, sinister profit motive and compelling lust interacted in New York City of 1980's.
At the script level, The Bonfire of the Vanities is a tragedy of a Wall Street bonds trader whose sheer misfortune causes his downfall though he does not endear himself to the readers by his philandering and vain ways that he feels he is entitled too.
