Although the border of the county is only a few minutes drive away from the camp, the trip home can take several days on foot and involves crossing a river.
Poor road conditions and the lack of a bridge crossing the river at the closest access point to Bong County mean that the county is inaccessible to transport from that route.
Even if the county is declared safe, it is not necessarily ready for return in terms of availability of basic infrastructure, shelter, water pumps, schools and health posts.

We held county workshops/forums in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, and at the Phebe Hospital Compound in Bong County to demonstrate the teaching of teachers.

In Lofa County, men and boys were reported to have been extrajudicially executed by the security forces on suspicion of backing armed opposition groups.
On several occasions in June and July, ATU and police forces reportedly entered a camp for internally displaced people in Bong County, fired in the air, seized men and boys and took them to Gbatala military base where they were severely ill-treated.
In December, a 14-year-old boy in Gbarnga, Bong County, was shot dead by police who subsequently said that he was an armed robber.

In 1965 Phebe moved to its present location near Gbarnga, in Suakoko, Bong County where it has operated as a 179-bed facility and has served as the only referral medical center and teaching hospital operating in central Liberia.
Prior to the arrival of UN security forces in Bong county, the entire hospital grounds were severely damaged and heavily looted.
Today Curran is currently operating as a mobile clinic in the Zorzor and Salayea Districts of Lofa County, with a staff of 19 persons without a resident physician or a medical laboratory.
