Bongzilla are a far more advanced musical unit than you might imagine.
No doubt, everyone in the Bongzilla camp would be disappointed to learn this stuff makes sense to non-smokers, as I find the drug fairly rotten, and the whole schtick annoying and overwrought.
But as for me, Bongzilla reminds me far too much of those wretched middle aged alcoholic men who used to sit at my bar all afternoon, talking in great lengths about booze.

5 years ago guided by the euphoric powers of THC and sickened by the lack of attention the decriminalization movement seemed to be getting from most pro-marijuana bands, Bongzilla laid down the sludgy devil weed worshipping doom and the protest was born.
Hell bound and weed-bent from day one, Bongzilla has been on a stoner rock mission to expose the hypocrisy and stupidity that plagues America’s anti-marijuana stance.
At the time when Bongzilla started 5 years ago it was really the thing that pissed me off the most.

Such is the case with Bongzilla, a band of Madison power-tokers who take their recreational pursuits — and here I’m talking about riffing as well as spliffing — very seriously.
The four current members of Bongzilla, who prefer to be called by their pseudonyms, have been together about three years.

To describe sludge kings Bongzilla as a simple sludge, doom or stoner band is selling this Wisconsin born and bred musical devastator short.
Bongzilla sounds exactly like you would expect them to x 50—loud, heavy, sludgy, groovy, and to top it off, these guys love the weed.
Since their inception, Bongzilla has been destroying stages across the world with their brutal musical onslaught and their pro-pot message.

I like Bongzilla for the simple reason that I can totally lose myself in their epic-length aural bludgeonings.
Aside from the elixir of sound, Bongzilla know the power of the repetitive riffÂ… one that resurfaces again and again in a song as the band phase in and out of monolithic jams.
It’s not so much the Bongzilla songs as the Bongzilla experience — the four live tracks attest to their power in a live setting as well.

Bongzilla were described as "swampcore", but that's jut a fancy way of saying hard-edged stoner rock.
The singing was rather unimportant since every song sounded like a jam session with the guitars and the singing was only there less then 10% of the time.
What also made this very good was that it was hard to know when one song ended and the other began, sort of like the best NOLA bands do.

Although Muleboy's vocals are harsh and far away from being melodic I wouldn't describe BONGZILLA's sound as Sludge, because it's a bit to friendly, although they are definitly influenced by this kind of music.
Their sound is more Blues than Metal, more Doom Rock than "stoner" and there are enough hooklines in the songs, so that you won't forget the album after putting it out of your player.
And, although BONGZILLA are authentic weed-addicts, I sometimes get a bit bored of their image and I wonder if they will stretch it over the next albums, if there will be more albums in the future.

For Bongzilla are as radically stupid as they are methodically stoned, and the end result is something akin to genius, something relative to retarded, and something very, very loud.
In other words, it may be weird, and it may not make any sense at the moment, and maybe the only thing that separates that which is Bongzilla from complete, drab ordinariness is sheer force of will, but at least it's something.
