The Ogasawara islands are a part of an island arc known as the fore arc.
The crust of the Bonin islands were formed by volcanic activity when subuduction began about 45-50 million years ago, and are composed mostly of an andesitic volcanic rock called Boninite, which is rich in magnesium oxide, chromium, and silicon dioxide.
The first recorded settlement of the islands was an American colony founded in 1830, and the descendents of these settlers live on the island today.

The shores are covered with coral; earthquakes and tidal waves are frequent, the latter not taking the form of bores, but of a sudden steady rise and equally sudden fall in the level of the sea; the climate is rather tropical than temperate, but sickness is almost unknown among theresidents.

The Bonin Island chain also known as the Ogasawara Islands, is home to countless outdoor activities including snorkelling, diving, hiking, swimming with dolphins, sea kayaking, fishing, surfing, whale watching, and countless other mainly aquatic sports.
Like those islands, they are pretty hard to get to and are one of a kind in the world so you get many bragging rights (watch a Japanese person's face when you tell them you're going to the Ogasawara shoto).
On the islands, I suggest staying at the Chichijima youth hostel http://oyh.jp/ (jinnybeach@oyh.jp) which is 3,045 yen per night with a YH card (1,000 yen more per night without) Info on how to get a card as well as info on the different hostels can be found at http://www.jyh.or.jp/english/index.html.

Two of the islands (Chichijima and Hahajima) are inhabited, and are served irregularly by a venerable freighter, the Kyoshu Maru no. 28.
I did not get the Bonin Islands Petrel, which breeds in the interval Nov.-Feb. (Harrison, 1983), although Brazil (1987) does say that it is to be expected only in "summer".
Miyakejima (an island 160km S of Tokyo, accessible by daily ferry) gave me the Izu Islands Thrush and the Japanese Murrelet (take a small boat to its breeding islets of Sanbondake) in March 1999, tho' I was too early for Ijima's Willow Warbler and Japanese Night Heron.
