Both petrels ceased activities at their nest entrance and walked 1 m from the petrel burrow entrance, nibbled his fingers and investigated his notebook with the "beak to the ground" pos- ture.
Petrels lined their nest chambers about 36 days before the single egg was laid and there was a pre-laying exodus of up to 24 days.

Body Temperature and Growth of Bonin Petrel Chicks
The early metabolic and thermoregulatory independence of Bonin Petrel chicks is partially due to the relatively stable micro-environment of the nest-chamber, which is typical of other burrow-nesting procellariiforms (Farner and Serventy 1959; Howell and Bartholomew, Con- dor 63:185-197, 1961; Wheelwright and Boerstoa 1979).
A recent visit to Midway Islands in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands presented us with an opportunity to measure the growth and fledging period of Bonin Petrel (Pterodroma hypoleuca) chicks, the thermal environment of their nest- burrows, and development of body temperature regulation.
The Bonin Petrel nests in a deep burrow (Grant et al., Auk 99:236-242, 1982); a pre-con- structed shaft provided access to the nest-chamber.

These medium to large (Relatively small long-winged tube-nosed bird that flies far from land) petrels feed on food items picked from the ocean surface.
The short, sturdy bills of the 30 Pterodroma ((biology) taxonomic group whose members can interbreed) species in this group are adapted for soft prey taken at the surface; they have twisted intestines for digesting marine animals which have unusual biochemistries.

On the 3d of June we regretted exceedingly not having clear weather, as the appearance of plover, sandlings, flocks of shearwaters, and several petrel and albatrosses, created a belief that we were near some island.
We were almost on the point of declaring them invisible also, when, after having stood to the eastward a few hours, we had the satisfaction to descry several islands, extending in a north and south direction as far as the eye could discern.

Petrel nests on Kaua'i, Maui and Hawai'i and Moloka'i.
The petrel does not have any natural defenses against predators such as rats, feral cats, and mongooses, and their burrows are very vulnerable.
Newell's Shearwaters nest high in the mountains like Hawaiian Petrel, although usually at slightly lower elevations, but as with that species it is very hard to witness birds on the nesting ground and the best way to see the species is to watch the sea from a prominent headland.

 Hawaiian Petrel
In flight, the Hawaiian Petrel's erratic, high-arching and swooping behavior identifies it as one of the Pterodroma petrels; and this is one of the larger species in the group, with longer, more pointed wings and tail, and a dark rump.
The strikingly white forehead, less contrasting upper parts, and relatively larger size distinguish it from the Bonin Petrel, which is found in the same waters.
The most similar-looking species is the Juan Fernandez Petrel which has only an indistinct or partial dark stripe on the underwing and a definite "M" across its upper parts.

Whereas the means for lead and cadmium were below the known effects levels, some individuals had levels high enough to cause adverse effects in the birds.
The mean values for mercury in Bonin petrel, red-tailed tropicbird, and fl-footed albatross were higher than the levels known to cause adverse reproductive and behavioral effects.

The finches also concentrate at the edge of tern colonies and take advantage of any disturbances by flying in and attacking the eggs whilst the adult birds are in flight.
The finches are not fussy about which eggs they eat and many species have lost eggs to them including Bulwer's Petrel, Wedge-tailed Shearwater, Sooty, Gray-backed and White Terns and Black and Brown Noddies, although presumably any species is at risk.
