Bonnaroo, the 3-year-old music festival that takes place about halfway between Nashville and Chattanooga, becomes, for one long summer weekend, the state's sixth-largest city.
Bonnaroo's site in rural Tennessee is away from it all but not too far away: "The figure that I hear," says Capps, "is that 70 percent of the population of the United States can drive to the festival in one day."
Bonnaroo is expanding in size, too, adding 10,000 more tickets to bring the total number of attendees to 90,000.

Founded in 2002, Bonnaroo (named after a Cajun-Creole term for having a good time) set up shop on a 500-acre farm in Manchester, Tenn., and with almost no traditional publicity or marketing, sold out the 70,000-person event entirely on the strength of the music.
Of course, the original 1969 Woodstock will always be the template for grand-scale American music festivals, but Bonnaroo stands on its own and doesn't concern itself with chasing the ghost of the quintessential event of the '60s -- or its ill-conceived revivals in 1994 and 1999.
Bonnaroo has become more of a cultural gathering than a concert, turning a piece of Tennessee farmland into a microcosm of the American music scene for one weekend in June.
