BOEKMANSTICHTING Studiecentrum voor kunst, cultuur en beleid
If museums don't want to become totally estranged from their public, they will have to develop a ‘convincing and inspirational vision of art'; they will have to stop slavishly following market mechanisms and also cease treating artists as if they were throwaway items.
Museums need to be aware of this and should be on the lookout for ways of involving the public in the presentation of culture, and also for introducing greater cultural variety among museum employees.
And this is fundamentally different from saying that each museum should clothe itself in a multi-cultural robe (flaunting as many cultures as possible) in order to scoop in generous subsidies.
