Female bonnetheads produce eggs that are maintained and nourished by a yolk-sac during the initial phase of gestation.
Bonnetheads are a common inshore shark and are often taken by small fisheries with shrimp trawls, nets, longlines, and hook-and-line.

The bonnethead was also consistently the second-most caught species, with the importance of the flnose and finetooth sharks alternating throughout the time series of catches.
For bonnethead, three of the five series exhibited negative slopes, one of which (the Oregon II series) was very highly significant and had the steepest slope (13%) of any of the 41 series examined.
The posterior of K for the bonnethead and flnose shark is more normal (Figures 19 and 21), whereas the posterior of K for the finetooth shark is skewed to the right, suggesting that the lower bound of K has more influence on the posterior than the upper bound (Figure 23).

Mote Marine Laboratory - Magazine Articles
A funny thing happened on the way to concluding that most female bonnethead sharks produce litters of young that were fertilized by multiple males: 81 percent of the females sampled as part of a recent study had pups fathered by only one male.
The bonnethead was chosen as a test species to help scientists understand the mating systems of similar sharks because they live in estuarine habitats and are more easily observed than other sharks.
Another interesting twist in the study, which will be the basis for future research, was that smaller bonnethead females were genetically monogamous, meaning that their eggs were fertilized by a single male, and that larger females had their eggs fertilized by more than one male, usually two.

It was further surmised that the hammer had evolved gradually, expanding sideways bit-by-bit over millions of years.
Therefore, it was deduced that the Bonnethead Shark is the most ancestral species, the Winghead the most derived, and the other hammerheads somewhere in between.
The molecular data strongly suggest that the Winghead Shark - not the Bonnethead - was the first hammerhead to diverge from the group's common ancestor and that the bonnethead was, in fact, the most recent hammerhead to appear.
