Phillip McLeod, a past employee and now member of the Booderee National Park Management Board, spoke of the years he worked in the Gardens, with many other Wreck Bay Community members.
The Booderee Botanic Gardens celebrated an important milestone on Friday 21 September 2001, with a gathering to recognise the 50th anniversary of the Gardens being established as the frost free annex of the Canberra Botanic Gardens (now the Australian National Botanic Garden).
At the 50th anniversary celebration the Director of National Parks, Mr Peter Cochrane, explained: "the early development of the Gardens was difficult - roads had to be established and power and water organised.

It has now been handed back to the tradional Aboriginal community at Wreck Bay to be managed jointly with Environment Australia as the Booderee Botanic Gardens.
