  YMA Movie Review - Boogeyman
The film's treatment of children's worst innate fears, that is, of the dark, dark closets and the dark space under the bed, make this film unsuitable for young children, who could be traumatised by it, leading to nightmares, bed wetting etc.
Boogeyman is based on childhood fears of the dark, dark closets and the dark space under the bed.
While this film is not recommended for children under the age of fifteen years, parents may wish to discuss with adolescents who do view the film any fears, or concerns they may have had when younger, or still maintain.

The film is a take on the classic "boogeyman", or monster in the closet.

Most people are familiar with the "boogeyman." He's the guy who's hiding under the bed, or in your closet, or the one responsible for the strange noises you hear in the night.
The boogeyman is seemingly omnipresent and affects children across the globe.
Boogeyman opens with a very well-done sequence that establishes the efficiency of the boogeyman.

The Hindu : Entertainment Chennai / Film Review : "Boogeyman"
THIS COLUMBIA Tristar Films presentation, produced by Ghost House Pictures and directed by Stephen Kay, is a psychological horror that fails to thrill.
More than the boogeyman, it is the creaking door (how predictable can you get?), door handle on which the camera stays fixed (the hero keeps staring at it once too often) and the pounding score in the background that try to frighten you.

 The Popkorn Junkie :: Boogeyman
This film will probably receive more flack from critics than anything else, because most critics judge horror films with the same standards as they would use to judge a drama or a comedy, and you cannot do that.
A horror film is unique because it can have those same clichés and constants that all other horror films have, but still be wholly original and entirely terrifying.
I cannot say that "Boogeyman" was as frightening as "The Grudge", because that film was on a whole different level of horror, but I can say that this was still a very tense picture, with some truly jump worthy scares and an intriguing plot.

Yes, the movie eventually reveals whether or not the boogeyman was involved, but this doesn’t occur well into the film’s third act.
The film degenerates into a loud fright-fest and suffers from some of the worst CG I’ve seen in years.
I don’t think Boogeyman is good enough as either a movie or a DVD to push for a purchase, but it works well enough to earn a rental.

The Film Asylum Review - Boogeyman (Barry Watson, Emily Deschanel)
Watson is so central to the films focus that no other cast members really get the chance to flex their acting muscles but its worth noting that Lucy Lawless (Xena), thanks to some heavy latex makeup, has let herself slip a bit with a brief appearance as the evil granny from hell.
The films epicentre is the suitably scary childhood home of our troubled Tim, now in the process of a much needed make-over, it is a character in its own right with typical haunted house creaky stairs, dark foreboding wood panelling, isolated location and a multitude of doors for creepy things to lurk behind.
The film makers have made a clear effort to keep the tone of the film very dark and oppressive yet deliberately subdued in its representation of the horrors that Tim has to face.

Boogeyman is a standard horror film that pushes an interesting concept and delivers nothing but cheap thrills and a hollow storyline.
Boogeyman is a half baked concept where the horror is lively and fun but the back story and reason behind the horror is stupid and downright moronic.
The Boogeyman himself not having any sort of history past a name, is one of the problems that director Stephan T. Kay should have tackled but instead he was more concerned with simply giving an homage to his favorite horror films of the past five years.

 Boogeyman movie review - AGGRESSIVE-VOICE.COM
"Boogeyman" is supposed to be a movie about everyone's biggest fear growing up as a child: the dormant monster living in your closet that waits in the middle of the night for the right moment to snatch you from your bed.
To make up for the nothingness, the film is coated in loud sound effects and is tossed up with flashbacks and jumps-cuts that have no logic.
Tim doesn't want to flat-out tell her he believes that the Boogeyman is still lurking around after all these years, probably because he doesn't want to give off the "insane" impression.

Boogeyman is another one of those throwaway films that most avid filmgoers will rightfully dismiss, and horror fans will find to be too weak to really hold up as a frightfest.
That is, until the film completely derails somewhere in the middle of the second act, at which time Director Stephen T. Kay seem to simply “let go” and let the film have some truly wicked fun.
We open the film in the world's most potentially terrifying room ever, chock full of objects that seem to be placed strictly because of their ability to look eerie in the dark.

Horror Movie Review | Boogeyman (2005) Barry Watson, Emily Deschanel
Unfortunately, the film loses its convictions before the end, and what could have been a fairly neat little thriller is ruined by the pointless and distasteful inclusion of a ludicrous and cheap-looking CGI monster, whose presence serves only to undermine all that has gone before.
This is a film where very little actually happens beyond a few loud noises and some would-be ominous atmospherics, and there is very little attempt to generate any feelings of menace or threat.
As a result, "Boogeyman" is unlikely to be enjoyed by anyone outside of its teen demographic, or anyone who has seen enough genre films to roll their eyes at the horror clichés which Kay relies upon so heavily.

Boogeyman has an unfortunate title, suggesting yet another ghost horror effects-greedy shockfest, such as Candyman.

Lucy Lawless - Boogeyman - Cast Members Biographies
Boogeyman was shot in New Zealand at exterior locations in and around Auckland and in studios in the western Waitakere City, where Raimi and Tapert’s hit syndicated television series Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys were shot from 1993 to2001.
During filming, the boogeyman was played as a character by actor/dancer Andrew Glover, whose movements and look were later enhanced, twisted and embellished by Oktobor.
Boogeyman also called for mechanical special effects, most spectacularly for the climactic scene of Tim’s showdown with the boogeyman, in which his bedroom is shaken with a force resembling a powerful earthquake.

Boogeyman is your standard, by the numbers, scare-em up thriller which wouldn't know an original idea if it leapt out from a cupboard and screamed "boo!".
Early on the film's central character Tim (Barry Watson) declares, "This is going to get ugly." Even by this premature stage there's enough evidence to prove him right.
One of Boogeyman's failings is that it offers Watson very little to do other than fix a permanent look of worry to his face.

Before "Boogeyman," the Movie, I thought that so many kids worldwide were still afraid of what might be lurking in closets, basements and under beds (even without parents' mischievous prompting) that it would be impossible to make a bad film about these archetypal fears.
There's not much in the way of character development, which is forgivable for a genre film, but there's also not much in the way of backstory or currentstory, which is all but a cardinal sin.
Much of the film is shot in darkness, low light, or muted palette scenes, and a lesser quality film stock simply wouldn't have worked.

Boogeyman is arguably the most unoriginal film in years.
Boogeyman is a testament to the view that, in horror, it's not what you see, it's what you don't see that's scarier as when we get to see the Boogeyman, the CG is so crap that it would be infinitely more chilling and realistic if Wile E. Coyote replaced the monster.
The most infuriating thing about Boogeyman is that it is a complete cut-and-shut of other horror in that pretty much any scene that is anywhere near half decent is completely ripped off from other films to the point that it's almost insulting.

Boogeyman (2005) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
It would be far too simple and rather mean-spirited to ask why the creators of this film decided to choose a title where one letter could be changed to create a completely different (yet appropriate) meaning for the film.
It is surely not the mark of an impressive film that one would find it entertaining to bandy about the title of a film whose title character is supposed to grab your attention and squeeze the living fear out of you.
The audience is granted few real, juicy shots of the Boogeyman of title fame and with the weak screen presence of Barry Watson, it's a difficult task finding just which character one should focus his or her attention on for some emotional satisfaction.

Film Review: Boogeyman by Brian Orndorf, Reader Weekly, Issue 305, February 10, 2005
They shake their camera around, deluge the film with artistically bankrupt boo scares, edit like they are receiving a shiny gold coin for every cut, and stall endlessly to get their film to a sellable running time.
“Boogeyman” takes home the distinction of being the first of the “PG-13ers” to be a completely incoherent exercise in style, without any attention paid to even the most basic of storytelling fundamentals.
If “Boogeyman” signals more films like this to follow, there are far worse nightmares out there to come than whatever is lurking in your closet.
