"Boogeyman" was really a great deception for me. I saw the trailer and I expected a promising story, exploring the fear of darkness of children through the American legend of the monster in the closet.
The legend of the Boogeyman does exist (it is called "Bicho-Papão"), but its location is not specified and certainly is not necessarily in a closet).
"Boogeyman" is watchable, not a masterpiece of the genre, but also not among "the worst horror movies" as commented by some users.

 Lucy Lawless: Boogeyman - Movie
The Boogeyman himself wasn't as well thought out as one would hope and being a big factor, the role of the boogeyman should be more dramatic and significiant than what it is in this movie.
Even though a disappointing movie, it is still "alright" and not a horrible and total disappointment of a film.
The myth of the boogeyman therefore is shamed by this movie.

 YMA Movie Review - Boogeyman
Most older adolescents should be ok to see this movie; however, it is recommended that parents still consider the film's content and assist their child to carefully consider their own ability to cope with its themes.
Older children and adolescents would be better able to cope with the movie's visual images; in fact the computer generated image of the Boogeyman is not nearly as impressive as images in many of the films currently showing with a PG or M classification.
Boogeyman is based on childhood fears of the dark, dark closets and the dark space under the bed.

Boogeyman (2005) Movie Review - The Hollywood News
In Boogeyman, Barry Watson plays Tim Jensen, a young man re-visited by a supernatural force that he claims burst from his closet and murdered his father when he was just a little boy.
Sadly though, he isn’t competent enough to make Boogeyman the old-fashioned ghost story, funhouse, thrill ride, it thinks it is. And it’s too bad really, because the movie is very well shot.
Many of the scares in Boogeyman are of the cheap variety, and are very reminiscent of similar such jolts produced by the insipid Thirteen Ghosts.

wokv.com: Event Guide Movie reviews, production notes, and more! - "Boogeyman"
Boogeyman is a layered film, with exceptional horror frights and "don't look" terrifying moments bolstered by characterization and storytelling strength more likely to be found in a psychological drama.
Boogeyman was shot in New Zealand at exterior locations in and around Auckland and in studios in the western Waitakere City, where Raimi and Tapert's hit syndicated television series Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys were shot from 1993 to2001.
Boogeyman also called for mechanical special effects, most spectacularly for the climactic scene of Tim's showdown with the boogeyman, in which his bedroom is shaken with a force resembling a powerful earthquake.

Horror Movie Review | Boogeyman (2005) Barry Watson, Emily Deschanel
Instead, "Boogeyman" is an almost archetypal example of modern Hollywood horror, whose script reads like a veritable checklist of clichés, and whose uninspired visuals scream 'made for television'.
Whilst there is something to be said for the value of restraint, "Boogeyman" is simply not a film which is intelligent enough to warrant the pulling of punches, and thus its reluctance to show anything unpleasant makes it rather dull.
As a result, "Boogeyman" is unlikely to be enjoyed by anyone outside of its teen demographic, or anyone who has seen enough genre films to roll their eyes at the horror clichés which Kay relies upon so heavily.

Boogeyman (2005) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
The audience is granted few real, juicy shots of the Boogeyman of title fame and with the weak screen presence of Barry Watson, it's a difficult task finding just which character one should focus his or her attention on for some emotional satisfaction.
Perhaps it's a ridiculous notion to ask a movie of Boogeyman's caliber to engage in things like plot and character motivation, but this film follows those "requirements" of intelligent filmmaking with less zeal than most of its contemporaries.
Staring at an amorphous object in a dark room and believing it to be some menacing creature only to learn, after flipping the light switch that the "creature" is nothing but some innocent piece of furniture has to be the most commonly portrayed visual fake in horror cinema.

When Boogeyman is released in a year under a different name, he expects it will be promoted heavily, that the film's marketing will far outweigh the cost to produce the film alone.

"Boogeyman" is supposed to be a movie about everyone's biggest fear growing up as a child: the dormant monster living in your closet that waits in the middle of the night for the right moment to snatch you from your bed.
Tim doesn't want to flat-out tell her he believes that the Boogeyman is still lurking around after all these years, probably because he doesn't want to give off the "insane" impression.
Knowing the eminent fate of their movie, the production studio allowed the film to hit theaters without any advance screening for critics.

 CNS Movie Review: Boogeyman
NEW YORK (CNS) -- In the hokey horror flick "The Boogeyman" (Screen Gems), Barry Watson plays Tim, a troubled young man who has been tormented all his life by memories of a traumatic event he "witnessed" in his bedroom as a boy.
In a sanity-salvaging move, his psychologist (Robyn Malcolm) suggests that, while back home to attend his mother's funeral, Tim spend a night alone in the creepy house in which he grew up, in order to prove to himself that the ghosts that have haunted him are nothing more than figments of his imagination.
Though not completely without some suspense and popcorn-tossing jolts, "Boogeyman" (no connection to the 1980 film) is a muddled mess of failed frights, horror-movie cliches and late-coming special effects pieced together by a mostly incoherent screenplay.

Plot Synopsis: Set in Chicago, 'Boogeyman' tells the haunting tale of a young man traumatized by memories of terrible events he experienced in his childhood bedroom and who, years later, reluctantly returns home to face his fears of a monstrous entity that could be real or merely a figment of his imagination.
The rest of the movie involves Tim doubting his sanity and awkwardly courting his childhood sweetheart (Emily Deschanel, who isn't given much to do but still manages to be the best thing in the movie).
The Boogeyman is a movie that I would highly recommend to fans of horror who want a refreshing change, or for couples looking for a good scare without violence and blood.

The Film Asylum Review - Boogeyman (Barry Watson, Emily Deschanel)
By no means without fault, Boogeyman does have some moments of serious fright in store for the viewers with a dense mood which shifts its focus from a straight up monster movie to a more personnel and challenging piece about a young mans struggle with his past.
Nowhere does Tim feel safe and the paranoia and stress which builds throughout the film is represented effectively by actor Barry Watson who’s a relative new comer to the world of horror cinema.

Everyone else will look at this movie, and its absurdly serious consideration of a reality where the Boogeyman does exist, and shake their heads in disbelief.
Either way, Boogeyman proves to be about as scary as you probably imagine it is, and only those who still grip their covers at night, cowering before the sight of their darkened closet door, will connect with it.
The Boogeyman doesn't let him stay there the whole night though, because that would be boring.

I also can't remember the last time that any movie gave me a nightmare that could be as obviously and directly attributed to a movie as this dream could be to this movie.
So, now, looking back on this movie, I believe that my initial assessment (and that of all the other people in the theater, some of whom were yelling, "Refund!" even before the first end credit flashed on the screen) may have been a bit misguided.
Unless absolutely everything in this movie is in Tim's imagination, in which case he no doubt lives in a padded cell somewhere, the Boogeyman at least does seem to have become physically real.

SPLICEDwire | "Boogeyman" movie review (2005) "Boogeyman" review, Stephen T. Kay, Barry Watson, Emily Deschanel
Opening in theaters nationwide today, the movie has been kept hidden from critics because, to be blunt, the studio thinks it's garbage and wants to rake in as much money as it can before word gets out.
In 2004 for example, nine movies were released without screenings (which may be a record), including "Alien vs. Predator," "Exorcist: The Beginning" and "Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid" in August alone, and "The Cookout" and "Paparazzi" one week later.
Because when that happens, it's not some cinema snob with a newspaper byline telling you the movie is rubbish -- it's the people who made the movie admitting to it themselves and just hoping you're not smart enough to listen.

There's not a horror movie cliché he doesn't use—often repeatedly—in a desperate attempt to raise goose bumps, but it's almost entirely for naught.
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Boogeyman is that horror genre specialist Sam Raimi produced this nonsensical bore.
