The Book of Abraham describes the heathen altar as being shaped like a bed: "it was made after the form of a bedstead, such as was had among the Chaldeans" (Abraham 1:13).

When he translated the gold plates of the Book of Mormon from the "reformed Egyptian" text (1827–1829), the Prophet stated that he did it "by the gift and power of God." Likewise, it was principally divine inspiration rather than his knowledge of languages that produced the English text of the book of Abraham.
Because the Book of Breathings is clearly not the book of Abraham, critics claim this is conclusive evidence that Joseph Smith was unable to translate the ancient documents.
For example, in chapter 12 of the Testament of Abraham there is a description of the judgment of the dead that matches in minute detail the scene depicted in Facsimile 3 of the book of Abraham and, incidentally, chapter 125 of the Egyptian Book of the Dead.

Through the years, whenever the Book of Abraham was printed there were included with the printed text three drawings, each designated as a "facsimile" from this alleged Book of Abraham.
The LDS church should realize that identification of the Egyptian documents as the Book of Abraham and the canonization of it as scripture in years past is no reason to reject the identification of the rediscovered Egyptian papyri and published facsimiles are strictly Egyptian funeral texts.

The Book of Abraham is vigorously attacked by LDS critics as evidence that Joseph Smith was a fraud.
To understand whether the tiny Book of Abraham is an authentic ancient text, one should deal with the text itself rather than the purported (and still unspecified) methods that generated it (and do it thoughtfully and prayerfully, preferably after having examined the Book of Mormon).
The Book of Breathings, fragments of which are found in the Joseph Smith papyri, therefore would appear to belong to the scroll that was used to generate the Book of Abraham.

The fall of the Book of Abraham was brought about by the identification of the actual fragment of papyrus from which Joseph Smith 'translated" the Book of Abraham.
On the cover of this tract is a photograph of the original fragment of papyrus from which Joseph Smith was supposed to have translated the Book of Abraham.
The fact that the papyrus Joseph Smith used as the basis for his Book of Abraham is in reality the Book of Breathings cannot be disputed because the name "Book of Breathings" appears clearly on the fourth line of the fragment.

Frequently, when reading a discussion on the LDS problem of the Book of Abraham, the apologists and critics beat around the bush--confusing the reader.
That scroll is not the Book of Breathings, but was probably part of the collection that A. Combs sold, which ultimately may have perished in the 1871 Chicago Fire.
Also interesting is the first full-page color illustration in the article which shows a bald Abraham about to kill his son with a dagger similar to the incorrectly restored Facsimile 1 in the Book of Abraham.
