The Book of Alma is the longest of all the books of the Book of Mormon, consisting of 63 chapters.
The book records the first 39 years of what the Nephites termed "the reign of the judges", a period in which the Nephite nation adopted a constitutional theocratic government in which the judicial and executive branches of the government were combined.
Alma, the chief judge and governor as well as the high priest over the people of Nephi, lead an army against Amlici and his followers and drove the rebellion out of the land.

For most of the LDS church's 150 year history, it was staunchly maintained by the church leaders that there were no changes in the Book of Mormon of a doctrinal nature.
Today: Alma 32:30: "But behold, as the seed swelleth and sprouteth and beginneth to grow, and then ye must needs say, That seed is good; for behold, it swelleth and sprouteth and beginneth to grow.
Many other citations could be given, but "out of the mouths of two or three witnesses..." it is evident that although the Lord supposedly dictated the Book of Mormon letter by letter, he could not spell, keep doctrine or characters straight, and even had serious problems with grammar and logic.

his book is an excellent collection of some of the more popular mysteries and a good compilation of all there was to say about each one at the time, but from a believer's point of view (at least in the case of "spontaneous human combustion").
Many of the mysteries have been solved since, but most haven't; and the book makes a good read for the person who's ready for a little more information about anomalous phenomena without being swamped with too much at once.

Two major technical issues kept me from enjoying the book as fully as I had hoped: two-dimensional villains, and too-wordy prose.
It seemed that just as I started to like a supporting player, he or she got killed, left behind, or consigned to literary oblivion with no sense that the character might return in a future book.
Killing off a few characters or leaving them "back at the ranch" may be necessary to advance the story, but care should be taken to ensure that the necessary ones don't disappear from the reader's scope without a trace.
