This book is extremely detailed and complex, and later the ideas were developed into what is predominant western view of the Chakras by the Theosophists, and largely the controversial (in theosophical circles) C.
This chakra is paralleled to the thyroid, a gland that is also in the throat, and which produces thyroid hormone, responsible for growth and maturation.
In Eastern thought, the chakras are thought to be levels of consciousness, and states of the soul, and 'proving' the existence of chakras is asking to 'prove' the existence of a soul.

This practice seems to originate in C.W. Leadbeater's book The Chakras (which was the first book to introduce the chakras in the West).
The functions of the third chakra, the Navel chakra, are closely related to the functions of the Liver and Gallbladder from Chinese Medicin.
The Heart chakra is mostly considered to be located at the center of the chest, however Leadbeater situates it in front of the heart, so left of the center.

This was the first book to describe the secondary chakras in the West (Leadbeater was a clairvoyant, and it seems quite a good one too, although I doubt he was in the same league as Steiner), and typically these are misunderstood as the primary chakras.
