This book was reprinted and expanded in 1835, combining the previous revelations with those that had been received over the prior two years.
The first 20 verses of section 47 in the Book of Commandments were altered and hung on the end of section 42 of the Doctrine and Covenants.
Thus, the Book of Commandments 47:1-20 became Doctrine and Covenants 42:78-93.

According to the main source, of these 613, 248 are mitzvot aseh ("positive commandments") and 365 are mitzvot lo taaseh ("negative commandments").
However, there were two commandments which God directed straight at the Jewish people: the first two of the Ten Commandments; these are phrased in the first person.
The tzitzit ("knotted fringes") of the tallit ("[prayer] shawl") are tied to the 613 commands by interpretation: principal Torah commentator Rashi bases the number of knots on a gematria: the word tzitzit (Hebrew: ציצת (Biblical), ציצית, in its Mishnaic spelling) has the value 600.

The book was to the press by December 1832.
While other copies of the Book of Commandments are known to exist, the uncut one (the pages' margins have not been trimmed) obtained by Ashworth is believed to be the only one with notations made by Oliver Cowdery on each of the four signatures of the book.
The mob put the press and some of the printed sheets of the Book of Commandments, along with the type, in an old log stable.

Testimony of the witnesses to Book of Commandments §.
The testimony of the Three Witness and Eight Witnesses to the Book of Mormon had been published in the Book of Mormon but the original testimony of the witnesses to the Book of Commandments was not published, nor does there seem to be a signed copy extant.
The testimonies of the Book of Mormon witnesses was originally printed at the back of the book, so Roberts is correct in suggesting the testimony of the Book of Commandments witnesses might have been destroyed by the mob.

But in the winter of 1834 they saw that some of the revelations in the Book of Commandments had to be changed, because the heads of the church had gone too far, and had done things in which they had already gone ahead of some of the former revelations.
In the Book of Commandments the Mormons were told to "consecrate all" their properties to the church, but in the Doctrine and Covenants they were told only to "consecrate of" their properties.

The book as an entirety, and as presented to the assembly by Oliver Cowdery, on the part of the committee, was then properly voted upon and unanimously adopted and ordered printed.
This endorsement of the Book of Covenants three years after the attempt to publish the commandments at Independence, Missouri, by one of the committee, and in such strong terms, is striking proof of the correctness of the published work of 1835.
Another thing is equally true, the Book of Commandments was never received and issued authoritatively by the church, the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, was.

First published in 1833, the Book of Commandments was scheduled for a print run of 10,000.
The book was reprinted in 1835 under the title Doctrine and Covenants.
Interestingly, most of the revelations collected in the Book of Commandments were first printed in the Church periodical The Evening and Morning Star.

Indeed, with this and the lack of the priesthood being mentioned in the history of the LDS Church many researchers (even including one of the witnesses to the Book of Mormon, David Whitmer) have felt that the Priesthood was all added later, rather than at the beginning, thus discrediting the claim for apostolic authority.
The problem remains however, when one studies the Book of Commandments and the D&C in the light of the subject of priestly authority, and LDS Church history, it soon becomes very apparent indeed that the Church invented the whole concept.
This is significant as the LDS Church is built on the concept of Priestly authority being restored.

Roberts contends that the revelation is the unpublished testimony of the witnesses to the Book of Commandments, that the brethren unanimously agreed to bear witness to the world, and probably did so.
This is the first overt expression of dissatisfaction with the wording of at least some of the revelations and provides a context for DandC 67, which is not mentioned in the minutes (nor is William McLellin's purported attempt to write a revelation).
The brethren agree to bear witness of the Book of Commandments.

Unless I'm much mistaken, this appears to be the quoted preface of the 'Second Book of Commandments'.
The preface needs to be removed and a NPOV summary of the book needs to be put up.

Because of the age of the book a few of the pages were not too clear, therefore, we have used photographs from another original copy of the Book of Commandments to replace the photographs that were unclear.
When the Book of Doctrine and Covenants was compiled in 1834, the church had then received many revelations to establish new offices and doctrine that are not even mentioned in the New Covenant of either of the two sacred books.
CHANGE L-- Notice that in the Book of Commandments the Mormons were told to "consecrate ALL" their properties to the Church, but in the Doctrine and Covenants they were told only to "consecrate OF" their properties.

That was the number of additions that exist between the Book of Commandments and the Doctrine and Covenants versions of the same revelations, which does not include the number of words deleted.
This is more evidence that proves that the Book of Commandments was completed and was being distributed to the saints at large.
In 1832, the only "former commandments" that existed at the time were the revelations which were printed in the Book of Commandments.

It was to serve as a preface to the "Book of Commandments." W.W. Phelps and Company began the printing of the "Book of Commandments" at Independence, Missouri, but the plant was destroyed by a mob in July 1833 before the book could be completed.
A revelation received November 3, 1831, known as the Appendix, does not appear in the "Book of Commandments," as was originally intended, but will be found as Section 100 of the 1835 edition of the Doctrine and Covenants and as Section 108 in all subsequent editions.

Most members of the Mormon church today think that John the Baptist actually appeared and restored the Aaronic Priesthood and that Peter, James, and John actually appeared to restore the Melchizedek Priesthood in 1829.
The idea for these events didn’t occur to the early church leaders until after this book was published (although Quinn claims that the Melchizedek Priesthood was restored in 1830--over a year after the traditional history claims it was restored).
In Quinn's book, you will also be able to find out the contents of many other revelations which went unpublished.
