Book of Tobit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Book of Tobit (or Book of Tobias in older Catholic Bibles) is a book of scripture that is part of the Catholic and Orthodox biblical canon, pronounced canonical by the Council of Carthage of 397 and confirmed for Roman Catholics by the Council of Trent (1546).
Doctrinally, the book is cited for its teaching on the intercession of angels, filial piety, and reverence for the dead.
It is generally believed that the book was written in the second century BC, on the basis of the scrupulous attention to ritual details and the stress laid upon giving alms.

Noldeke and Lohr hold that the book was composed in Egypt, referring to the facts that the demon Asmodeus on being overcome flees to Egypt (8:3) and that there were Jews in Egypt who remained loyal to their ancestral faith and were nevertheless promoted to high places in the state.
Tobit exists in an unusually large number of manuscripts and versions showing that the book was widely read and regarded as important.

The canonicity of the entire Old Testament, and thus, Tobit, was officially settled for the Roman Catholic Church at the Councils of Florence and Trent.
In the Anglican Communion, Tobit is considered a part of the Old Testament Apocrypha, which the Church reads for example of life and instruction of manners, as Jerome advised, yet does not use these books to establish doctrine (see Article VI of the Articles of Religion).

Moreover, the book’s description of long-suffering Sarah, whose seven husbands all died on their wedding night, carries on another major theme of Holy Scripture: the barren woman, of which the elder Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Hannah, and Elizabeth are better known examples.
It is my persuasion that the message of Tobit should begin with a proper analysis of its moral message exactly as it appears at the literary level, without recourse to hidden symbolisms that its author himself could scarcely have suspected and that float, in fact, without sufficient grounding in ancient patristic and liturgical texts.

Although it is set in the aftermath of the first Jewish holocaust, when the ten lost tribes of Israel (a separate country from the longer-surviving southern kingdom of Judah) were deported to Assyria in 722 BCE, it was probably not written down in its present form until the last quarter of the second century BCE.

The name is most probably derived from the Hebrew root meaning "to destroy": so that the being would correspond to the demon called Abaddon, the Destroyer in the Apocalypse, ix, 11.
The Book of Tobias relates that the virgin Sara, the kinswoman of Tobias, had been given successively to seven husbands; but they had all been slain on the night of the nuptials, before the consummation of the marriage.
From this fact, a superstition had arisen that the demon loved the maiden and slew her husbands through jealousy.
