Only the members of the Church of the SubGenius were expected to be saved from this SubGenius version of the apocalypse, by being carried away in the spaceships of the Sex-Goddesses.

The original group, using such pseudonyms as "Pastor Buck Naked", "Susie the Floozie", "Palmer Vreedeez", and "Pope Sternodox", forwarded their literature to a number of underground pop-culture figures such as R._Crumb, Paul_Mavrides, and the New Wave rock group Devo, who embraced it and incorporated it into their work.
The popularization of the Internet in the mid-1990s brought a new surge of interest in the Church, resulting in dozens of home-made, elaborately decorated web sites and two Usenet newsgroups, ''alt.slack'' and ''alt.binaries.slack.'' (A third newsgroup, ''alt.binaries.multimedia.slack,'' was created on March 12, 2005.) Ivan Stang maintains the official SubGenius home page at http://www.subgenius.com today.
The central figurehead and symbol of the Church is the smiling, pipe-smoking face of J._R._Bob_Dobbs, an image based on 1950s clip art.

The Subgenius foundation was actually begun back in 1979 by a Dallas filmmaker named Douglas St. Clair Smith, who now goes under the name Ivan Stang.
He, along with Philo Drummond (possibly also a pseudonym) put together the first pamphlet announcing the Church and then published the "bible" of SubGeniuses "The Book of the Subgenius." Stang had always been interested in fringe and weirdo groups, a lot of which he lists in his book "High Weirdness

Well, The Book of the SubGenius is brought to us by those people I loosely call "the Discordian folks," that band of merry pranksters out in California who count Robert Anton Wilson and Antero Alli amongst their members.
The SubGenius is one who recognizes his or her unique personhood and strives to maintain it's integrity in the face of the immense societal pressures of "The Conspiracy." "Of course people think you're weird; thank God (or Bob Dobbs*) for that!" the book proclaims.
The book gives it's views on many aspects of life, from the mundane to the exalted.
