Book series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A book series is a sequence of books with common characteristics, typically written by the same author, or marketed as a group by their publisher.
Thus, the books in a series are sometimes enumerated according to the internal chronology rather than in publication order, depending on the intended purpose for the list.
Examples of this series include works from the Chronicles of Narnia, where the fifth book in the series, The Horse and His Boy, is actually set during the time of the first book, and the sixth book, The Magician's Nephew is actually set long before the first book.

Serial books such as Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events, J. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, and Avi’s Tales from Dimwood Forest are useful additions to the classroom reading list because the consistencies from one book in the series to the next provide support for readers.
When the first book in the series is completed and a character has been studied, conduct a class discussion about one of the characters.
When the students have completed the next book in the series, ask them to complete a Graphic Map on their own, outlining the events in the life of the character whom they followed over the course of the series.

Amazon.com: The Penultimate Peril (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 12): Books: Lemony Snicket,Brett Helquist   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The longest book in the series, it is the one that has the least to say, advancing the plot not one iota, which here means "we're pretty much the same place we started after 353 pages".
This book resuscitates many of the surviving characters from the other books, and throws them together to set the scene for what hopefully will be "The Efficacious Ending", but it rambles on too long, and has too many pages of unnecessary filler material.
After the first 11 books, that were laced with fl comedy and inopportune situations handled and aligned in a way to make sense, the 12th books somehow leaves the reader gasping for more and ends with a flat note.

 The Protection of Book Titles
Kappa Books, Inc., (308 F. 3rd 1156), the Court of Appeals discussed the issue of a book series in a case that was an appeal from a hearing that resulted in the cancellation of trademark.
Other book titles, of course, may have little or no relation to the contents of the book, such as Gone with the Wind, which is a fictional novel about several individuals living in Atlanta during the Civil War.
A trademark in the title to this single book would compromise the policy of unrestricted use after expiration of the copyright because a book with a trademarked title, of course, could be published only under a different title.
