Books on cryptography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In contrast, the revolution in cryptography and secure communications of the last 25 years is well covered in the available literature.
The book caused serious concern at the NSA despite its lack of coverage of specific modern cryptographic practice, so much so that after failing to prevent the book being published NSA staff were informed to not even acknowledge the existence of the book if asked.
A book focusing on elliptic curves that begins at the undergraduate level (for those who have had a course on abstract algebra) and progresses into much more advanced topics, even at the end touching on Andrew Wiles' proof of the Taniyama-Shimura conjecture which led to the proof of Fermat's last theorem.

Encyclopedia article on Cryptography [EncycloZine]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Cryptography (from Greek kryptós, "hidden", and gráphein, "to write") is, traditionally, the study of means of converting information from its normal, comprehensible form into an incomprehensible format, rendering it unreadable without secret knowledge — the art of encryption.
Secondly, cryptography has come to be in widespread use by many civilians who do not have extraordinary needs for secrecy, although typically it is transparently built into the infrastructure for computing and telecommunications, and users are not aware of it.
Asymmetric cryptography also provides mechanisms for digital signatures, which are way to establish with high confidence (under the assumption that the relevant private key has not been compromised in any way) that the message received was sent by the claimed sender.

The Codebreakers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Codebreakers - The Story of Secret Writing (ISBN 0684831309) is a book written by David Kahn in 1967 comprehensively chronicling the history of cryptography from ancient Egypt to the time of its writing.
The United States government attempted to have the book altered before publication, and there is even a story that an attempt was made to purchase its rights from the publisher in an attempt to prevent publication.
The book was republished in 1996, and this new edition includes an additional chapter briefly covering the events since the original publication; see the "Books on cryptography" article for other works which cover this later history in more detail.

The book is becoming dated, in that there have been many advances in the mathematical/algorithmic topic areas covered in this book, and most books don’t write their source code examples in assembly language these days.

A readable, introductory textbook on cryptography and network security; possible choice as textbook, although it is not precise enough for serious study, in my opinion.

What is cryptography? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Cryptography is used to protect e-mail messages, credit card information, and corporate data.
Cryptography systems can be broadly classified into symmetric-key systems that use a single key that both the sender and recipient have, and public-key systems that use two keys, a public key known to everyone and a private key that only the recipient of messages uses.
Contains links to information on cryptography, a tutorial on public key encryption for secrecy and a discussion of the debate regarding government control of cryptography.

Books on classical cryptography owned by Dr. Stuart Savory
Most books on cryptography are in English, there are only a few crypto books in German.
Some of the books are rather old, being signed original editions :-) so I have given the ISBN numbers of their more modern reprints, so that you may have a chance of obtaining a copy, if interested.
The books are arranged in chronological order of publication, whence you can see when it was permissible to reveal some secrets (this applies especially to the Bletchley Park books on Ultra).

Cryptography in C and C++ mainly focuses on the practical aspects involved in implementing public key cryptography methods, such as the RSA algorithm that was recently released from patent protection.
This book should be entitled, "A Detailed Account of the Construction of a Large-Precision Number Library of the Sort that can be Used for RSA and Similar Cryptographic Systems, with a few Examples." The book fulfills this latter title exceptionally well.
This book is a great book, but I think the author spent too much time on numbers, and not enough on cryptography.

PREFACE TO A SALES CATALOGUE OF ANTIQUARIAN BOOKS ON CRYPTOGRAPHY by David Kahn
The polished mechanisms indeed glitter, but the books, in the richness of their typography, their illustrations, their bindings, the very thoughts of their authors – the books glow like rubies.
I had all but memorized Galland’s descriptions, but the books defeated me. They were all in Latin, which I did not know; I would not have been permitted into the NYPL’s rare book room to consult them; I could not afford them, and would not have known from which dealers to obtain them.
I knew that it was set out in the first printed book on cryptology, that Trithemius was an abbot – whatever that was – and that an aura of occultism enveloped the book.

If you have a solid mathematical base and crypto knowledge, the Handbook of Applied Cryptography would be a better reference, but for the rest of us, Applied Cryptography is superb.
The only qualms I had was that despite advertising "Protocols, Algorithms and Source Code in C" the book includes only source code right at the very end, to a handful of encryption algorithms.
