The county was created from eastern Winnebago County and borders Wisconsin on the north side, McHenry County on the east and DeKalb County on the south.
Of the northern tier of counties, it is the smallest--at 290 square miles.
The county seat is Belvidere and the population on July 1, 1999, was 39,560, an increase of 8,754 over the 1990 census.

The inactive landfill occupies approximately 10 acres of a 139 acre area owned by the Boone County Conservation District (BCCD), and is bordered by the Kishwaukee River to the west, Spencer Park to the south, a gravel pit to the north, and Appleton Road (a residential neighborhood) to the east (Figures 1, 2 and 3)(9).
While most of Boone County is rural, Belvidere has an industrial base which includes automobile and furniture manufacturing, metal fastener production, and several light industries (16).

Boone County was formed from an act of the Virginia General Assembly on March 11, 1847 from Cabell, Kanawha, and Logan counties.
The county was named in honor of Daniel Boone (1734-1820), the famous hunter and explorer, founder of Kentucky, Lieutenant Colonel of the Virginia militia, and member of the Virginia General Assembly representing Kanawha County (in 1791).
Until the county's first courthouse was built at the junction of the Pond and Spruce forks of Little Coal river, court was held in the log church at the mouth of Turtle Creek.

The MIG/Dewane Landfill (MIG) is a 47-acre, former landfill located 0.25 miles east of Belvidere in Boone County Illinois.
During its operation, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) permitted MIG to accept household, municipal, commercial, and industrial waste.
Improper capping resulted in a 5 to 10-acre depression in the middle of the landfill that collected precipitation, which ponded and infiltrated the landfill, resulting in numerous leachate seeps throughout the landfill area.
