The Des Moines River is a tributary river of the Mississippi River, approximately 525 mi (845 km) long to its farther headwaters, in the upper Midwest of the United States.
The largest river flowing across the state of Iowa, it rises in southern Minnesota, and flows across the state of Iowa from northwest to southeast, passing from the glaciated plains into the unglaciated hills near the city of Des Moines, which takes its name from the river.
Historic floods on the river and its tributary the Raccoon in the summer of 1993 forced the evacuation of much of the city of Des Moines and nearby communities.

The fertile floodplain along the Ohio River in Boone County seems to have attracted those settlers who were more interested in agriculture than in commerce, but there are other reasons, including geography and the nearby development of Cincinnati, for the lack of commercial growth in Boone County.
Boone County's Irish- Americans became prosperous in their new home and contributed much to the heritage of southern Boone County.Florence, a major crossroads community, was established at the intersection of roads from Covington to Louisville and Lexington.
The population of Boone County grew by twenty percent from 1940 to 1950.

Des Moines River, 9/13/03   We joined Nate on the Des Moines between Kalo and Dolliver as he scouted a scenic setting for the cover photo of his book.
The Skunk River Navy, with some assistance from the Squaw Creek Watershed Council and a few area paddlers, collected IOWATER data at Brookside Park, then picked up trash (photos) to S.E. 16th Street (9/9/01).
The Skunk River Paddlers, along with a few friends, took Sunday afternoon to help the Story County Conservation Board celebrate their tenth year of providing enhanced services, made possible by the Story County Conservation Center at McFarland Park.

The counties involved signed resolutions designating a trail on the river from Minnesota to the Mississippi River the "Des Moines River Water Trail."
