A new national park of more than 64,000ha has been officially opened on the Goldfields today, forming the core of a new conservation area.
Premier Richard Court said today that the Goldfields Woodland National Park, west of Coolgardie was part of a new conservation reserve network that extended over almost 152,500ha on either side of the Great Eastern Highway between Coolgardie and Southern Cross.
The State Government has committed to creating 12 new national parks throughout the South-West forest region, and a total of 15 new national parks and three conservation reserves across the State, to protect more of the State's natural beauty.

In Victoria, the fire in the Alpine National Park in East Gippsland had burned out an estimated 30,000 ha, and, although about 400 firefighters were clearing lines which will ultimately contain the fire, it was regarded as virtually uncontrollable due to the remote and rugged country in which it is burning.

The Goldfields Woodlands National Park straddles the Great Eastern Highway 60 km west of Coolgardie, running for another 40 km beside the road.
The national park incorporates several sites interpreting these features and the Aboriginal culture, history and ecology of the area.
An additional area of 142,140 ha to the south is proposed to be added to the national parkand a further 10,000 ha to the other conservation reserves.

Also, once across the border, you enter the Nullarbor National Park and the road skirts the coastline with numerous lookout points along the coast all the way through until the road swings away again on the final approach to the Nullarbor Roadhouse.
The "30 second" OzTent went up in just that - 30 seconds, forming an instant playground for Chardae who was experimenting with the transition from sitting to crawling and Leah was ecstatic to learn that the tent doubled as her art room where she could draw and colour-in without getting dust all over her work.

With an early start we passed Kalgoorlie through Broad Arrow and on to Leinster then stopping overnight at the Laverton Caravan Park.
I know of a punishment for this type of vandalism it really suits the crime and the vandals would never forget it but it could not be published and probably violates all types of human rights.
We were the only people at the cave at the time and it was great to sense the isolation, the sense of being where a part of Australian history was made.
