Topic: Boot floppies

  Boot Floppies
This is a boot floppy that will allow you to access most CD ROM's.
It has a much faster boot time than the original since it doesn't take the time to create the RAM disk and uncompress all the utilities to it.
If you can't boot to NT for a variety of reasons, it might be a good idea to have made up a boot floppy before the problem arises.

However, some such boot disks contain only the kernel, and assume you will be using the programs on the distribution's installation disks to fix whatever problem you have.
You can't use the floppy drive you use to mount the root floppy for anything else.
However, if you have enough memory, you can configure your boot floppy to load the root disk to a ramdisk (the boot floppy's kernel needs to be specially configured for this).

Booting from an existing operating system is often a convenient option; for some systems it is the only supported method of installation.
Booting With the Rescue Floppy ----------------------------------- Booting from the Rescue Floppy is easy: place the Rescue Floppy in the primary floppy drive, and reset the system by pressing _reset_, or by turning the system off and on.
If you aren't using a boot manager (and this is probably the case if you don't know what a boot manager is) and you don't have another different operating system on the same machine, answer ``Yes'' to this question.

In a few cases, however, booting from CD may not be possible or practical -- for instance, if the system in question does not support CD booting, or if the installation image for whatever reason is not bootable.
If there is no recourse to the original media, then a boot floppy may be the only viable solution.
Windows 2000 has always had the ability to build boot floppies from the CD, to allow an install without needing a CD boot process.
