Bootheel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Missouri Bootheel is the southeasternmost part of the state of Missouri, lying between the Mississippi River and the St.
Strictly speaking, it is composed of the counties of Dunklin, New Madrid, and Pemiscot, but the term is sometimes broadly used to refer to the entire southeastern corner of the state.
The Bootheel gets its name from the shape of its boundaries, an area added to Missouri when it was granted statehood due to the influence of John Hardeman Walker, a major landowner in the area.

SOS, Missouri - State Archives Missouri History FAQ - Origins of the Bootheel
The inclusion of the "bootheel" in the boundaries of Missouri has been credited to John Hardeman Walker, a landowner and influential citizen of southeast Missouri.
Walker was born in Tennessee in 1794 and came to the New Madrid area of the Territory of Missouri at the age of sixteen.
Walker, who preferred the area, and his holdings, to be under the protection of Missouri state laws, lobbied in Missouri and Washington D.C. for inclusion of the "bootheel" within the boundaries of the state of Missouri.

The Missouri Bootheel is the southeasternmost part of the state of Missouri, lying between the Mississippi River and the St. Francis River.
The Bootheel has long had a reputation for lawlessness; remote settlements along the river banks, miles from paved roads, provided an ideal environment for moonshining and bootlegging.
This fault zone is responsible for a very major series of earthquakes that rocked the area in 1811 and 1812; supposedly it rang church bells along the East Coast and resulted in a subsidence that led to the formation of Reelfoot Lake across the Mississippi River in West Tennessee.

Seismic and geomorphic studies suggest that the Bootheel lineament may be a surface rupture of a fault that bypasses the central step-over in the seismic zone.
The lower channel fill is restricted to the west side of the lineament terminating at the Bootheel lineament and at the channel cut-bank.
The paleochannel cut-bank margin is bisected at the point of intersection with the lineament, and relative locations of the paleochannel east and west of the lineament show the Bootheel lineament to be a right-lateral strike-slip fault with horizontal and vertical offset.
