Bootleg recording - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some bootlegs consist of works-in-progress or discarded material without the artist's involvement, and sometimes against his or her will; these might be made from master recordings stolen or copied from a recording studio or a record label's offices, or from demo recordings.
Bootlegging is often incorrectly referred to as piracy but there are important differences between the two terms.
Bootlegging is trafficking in recordings that the record companies have not commercially released and may or may not be legal.

Bootleg was a term which originally referred to the shank or top part of a boot, the part which is around the leg instead of the foot.

An examination of the bootleg record industry and its impact upon popular music consumption   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Generally bootleg records present unauthorized recordings based on unauthorized taping of live performances or radio and television broadcasts, or stolen tapes from unreleased studio sessions of a particular artist or group.
Bootleg or underground recordings are generally the product of "performance piracy;" thus, they represent the creation of unauthorized recordings not from preexisting ones, but from unauthorized taping of live performances or radio and television broadcasts, or utilization of stolen tapes from unreleased studio sessions of a particular artist or group.
He argued that despite the mediocre fidelity of many Bootleg records, an objection raised by some segments of the underground radio and press, they were in many cases esthetically superior to the material being released by the legitimate record companies.

 The Great "Bootleg" Coal Industry
The total number of trucks hauling bootleg coal from the holes to the consumers is between 3,500 and 5,O00, and from two to three men earn their living on each vehicle.
Bootleg coal, in fact, is the chief basis of economic life not only in Centralia, which I have mentioned, but to a lesser extent also in Shamokin, Mount Carmel, Shenandoah, Girardville, Mahonoy City, Tremont, and at least a dozen other communities.
The bootleg towns are preponderantly Catholic; so, feigning concern for the Eighth Commandment, I approached several parish priests, some of whom, I had heard, were accepting church dues in the form of bootleg coal and were using it to heat their churches, parochial schools, and parish houses.

 Anime News Network - bootleg
Bootlegging now refers most commonly to the practice of making, distributing and selling unauthorized copies of copyrighted materials; also known as copyright piracy.
Although these bootlegs were legal in Taiwan, it was illegal to import them into most other countries; Taiwanese bootlegs were always illegal in North America.
While technically illegal the instant they are sold, distributed, traded or even given away for free, fan translations such as fansubs and fandubs are generally considered bootlegs only if they are either sold for profit and/or distributed after the title has been domestically licensed.

 THE BOOTLEG MANIFESTO/FAQ
Bootleg Records are usually recordings of live concerts or unreleased songs that were performed in the studio, live TV appearances or alternate versions of well-known songs.
Bootlegs that were recorded from the TV have decent sound, like an AM radio, but they are all in mono, and are not in true high fidelity sound.
Some bootlegs have songs cut in the middle, some are missing songs, some use extremely bad, high-generation source tapes, some have bad pressing quality, some are mastered at the wrong speed...

Bootleg FAQ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Full bootlegged series usually run about $35-$50, far cheaper than a legitimate company could get away with, because it costs money to author the disks, buy the necessary licenses, etc. Since bootleggers sidestep the expensive legal issues, they can afford to sell their disks for very cheaply.
However, this bootleg of the series, and this one as well have very bad translations, due to the fact that they are translated from Japanese to Chinese and then to English.
Now, CD bootlegs are slightly trickier to spot, since there aren't as many discrepancies between the bootlegs and the originals, but if you look carefully you'll know a bootleg from a legit CD.

USATODAY.com - N.Y. judge strikes down anti-bootleg law   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Baer found the bootleg law was written by Congress in the spirit of federal copyright law, which protects writing for a fixed period of time — typically for the life of the author and 70 years after the author's death.
But the judge said the bootleg law, which was passed "primarily to cloak artists with copyright protection," could not stand because it places no time limit on the ban.
The bootleg law calls for prison terms of up to five years for first offenders and 10 years for second offenders, plus fines.

Bootlegs, An insight into the shady side of music collecting!
The first rock bootleg was released 30 years ago and during the decades since this illegal practice has catered for the demands of music fans by releasing rare and live recordings, whatever the means and circumstances.
That first bootleg is now legendary, a collection of Bob Dylan recordings dating from 1961, plus miscellaneous studio out-takes, and seven tracks from the Basement tapes sessions, all under the name of ‘The Great White Wonder’ due to the fact that the sleeve was plain white.
Generally acknowledged as the first bootleg CD when it was given the digital treatment in the late 1980s, it was finally given an official release in 1998.

In some cases bootleg CDs are a waste of technology since these are taken from the original boots of the same name, not new or better sources.

The Mavens' Word of the Day   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The original meaning of bootleg in the seventeenth century was a rather boring one: 'the upper part of a boot'.
In early use, around 1890, this was usually referring to liquor, with "bootleg" as a noun being more-or-less equivalent to moonshine, and as a verb meaning 'to smuggle liquor'.
Still later senses, such as the bootleg play, which was in use by the 1940s, bring the idea of simple deception to bear.
