Topic: Bootleg play

In Football, what is a Bootleg?
A bootleg play involves the quarterback faking a hand-off to a running back, then moving in the opposite direction for a pass or a run of his own.
During a bootleg play, however, the quarterback only pretends to hand off to the running back, and the running back draws the defense's attention away from the real ball carrier, the quarterback.
The bootleg play is just one of a number of trick plays available to the offense during a game.

Bootleg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bootleg was a term which originally referred to the shank or top part of a boot, the part which is around the leg instead of the foot.
From the practice of hiding small items in a boot shaft to smuggle them past the authorities, the word became a verb, meaning "to smuggle" and an adjective, describing something that has been smuggled (or, more rarely, stolen).

The Mavens' Word of the Day
The original meaning of bootleg in the seventeenth century was a rather boring one: 'the upper part of a boot'.
In early use, around 1890, this was usually referring to liquor, with "bootleg" as a noun being more-or-less equivalent to moonshine, and as a verb meaning 'to smuggle liquor'.
Still later senses, such as the bootleg play, which was in use by the 1940s, bring the idea of simple deception to bear.

 Commentary
The basic definition of a bootleg is the quarterback intentionally running out of the pocket toward either sideline during a pass play or a pass/run option play, normally with an offensive lineman in the lead.
There are several variations of the bootleg, but it is most often accompanied by “play-action.” The bootleg, whether accompanied by play-action or not, is intended to confuse the defense by moving the quarterback away from where the defense expects him to be, which is in the pocket in a drop-back setting.
The bootleg is especially effective against aggressive defenses and defenses with slow defensive ends (or even one slow defensive end, as has been the case with Eric Hicks the past couple of years).

On the passing play the LG and the FB do the same thing, but the counter fake, the playaction, the RBs part, is to the left.
Of course, if the playaction run was to the right and the bootleg to the left with a counter fake that would draw the defence to the area you are trying to open up for the QB to bootleg into, which would be even more contradictory.
You’re right that counter bootleg plays don’t work very well at lower levels of football (high school, maybe college) because you often draw the defense right towards the bootleg.
