  Family Boraginaceae
Members of the family Boraginaceae are herbs, shrubs or trees, characterized by leaves with rough hairs, inflorescences sometimes coiled at their tips, and fruit a capsule or drupe (fleshy) of four 1-seeded nutlets.
Boraginaceae is a family displaying a range of differences in habit, leaf, inflorescence, flower and fruit morphology.
The fruits and seeds of members of the family Boraginaceae in the southern African flora are dispersed in various ways.

Boraginaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Boraginaceae belong, according to the APG II, among the euasterid I group including the orders Gentianales, Lamiales, and Solanales, but whether they should be assigned to one of these orders or to their own (Boraginales) is still uncertain.
The Boraginaceae are paraphyletic with respect to Hydrophyllaceae and the latter is included in the former in APG II system.
In some recent classifications the Boraginaceae are broken up into several families: Boraginaceae s.s., Cordiaceae, Ehretiaceae, Heliotropiaceae, Hydrophyllaceae, and Lennoaceae.

 Boraginaceae
The Boraginaceae has around 2,000 species in total but only 50 in our part of the world; of these, 43 are native species.
What makes the inflorescence of Boraginaceae distinctive (but not unique) is that, as each flower matures, the pedicel supporting it departs at a slight angle from the main stem and elongates until, at flowering, it is often above the flower before it in the flowering sequence.
The Boraginaceae has little economic importance, although Borago officinale, borage, used to be used as a herb but is more often grown as a source of nectar for bees nowadays, and Symphytum officinale is often touted as a potherb.

 Gentianales
Boraginaceae (plus Vahliaceae) may be associated with Lamiales; only in ndhF analyses is there some support for a position in Solanales (Olmstead et al.
Boraginaceae have sometimes been associated with Lamiaceae in particular, but the latter have iridoids, opposite leaves, square (not rounded) stems, monosymmetric flowers usually with 4 stamens, endosperm with haustoria and embryo with a long suspensor, and the two are not close.
Rough to hispid, spiral, exstipulate leaves occur throughout the family, the inflorescence is cymose, and the flowers usually are radially symmetrical and with an often clearly 4-lobed and 4-ovulate bicarpellate gynoecium.

The majority of the species are found in three of his families: Lamiaceae (3200), Verbenaceae (2600) and Boraginaceae (2000), with Lennoaceae (4-5) being a much smaller group.
The Boraginaceae are divided into five subfamilies based primarily on variation in ovary morphology.
Unlike the rest of Boraginaceae, the placentation of the Hoplestigmataceae is parietal rather than axile, and the numerous stamens (20-35) and numerous corolla lobes (11-14) are unusual even for the Solananae where all but Cronquist refer the Boraginaceae.
