Border-Gavaskar Trophy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For this reason, and with the decline in England's performances since the 1980s, the Border-Gavaskar trophy is now considered by cricket fans in India and Australia to be equal to, if not better than, the traditional Ashes series contests between England and Australia (although the 2005 Ashes is challenging that).
The first Border-Gavaskar Trophy was played for in the 1996/97 season, which was won by India.
It is named after the cricketing legends Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar, from Australia and India respectively.

 Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2001
The second edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy had attempted to be a more honest evaluation of the competing teams and in a sense, a sincerer tribute to the greatness of the icons, who had lent their names to it.
From the very outset the Border Gavaskar trophy appeared to be a poor cousin of the Ashes and the Frank Worrel Trophy, both in terms of quality and quantity of cricket played between these two countries.
It is co-incidental that both Border and Gavaskar played 20 matches against India and Australia respectively and there is a very thin difference of 17 runs in their career aggregates.

Gavaskar did it against the West Indies at Georgetown (probably his most favourite cricketing venue) on the tour of 1982-83, just prior to the 1983 World Cup, while Tendulkar reached the same landmark against England at Ahmedabad in 2001-02.
It must be said in favour of Gavaskar that when he started playing for India it was an era when Indian cricket had very little to boast about and the team mostly played Test matches to draw a match rather than to win.
