As Enterprise enters the Borderland, Soong does seem initially helpful, particularly when the crew soon encounters trouble.
Plus, Soong is familiar with the area the Augments are in — the Borderland — a volatile region between the Klingon Empire and the Orion Syndicate that is a magnet for danger.

 [ENT] Jammer's Review: "Borderland"
The area is called the "Borderland," which sounds suspiciously like "Neutral Zone." The Enterprise has barely entered the Borderland when they are attacked by Orion slavers and nine members the Enterprise crew are kidnapped from the ship and promptly put up for slave auction on a nearby merchant world.
Sometimes I get painted into a corner with my star ratings, which seems to be the case with "Borderland," an episode I liked more than either of the " Storm Front " installments but which nevertheless feels sort of...
The episode is the first part of a three-episode storyline, and when it comes down to it, much of what happens here is incidental rather than crucial.

 STARTREK.COM : Article
The fourth episode of Season 4 — and the 80th hour of Enterprise overall — is tentatively slated to air Friday, October 29.
"Borderland" was helmed by veteran Trek director David Livingston, whose last Enterprise job was " The Council." Though Coto, as head writer, guided the conception of the story, the script itself was penned by Ken LaZebnik, a new staff writer on the show with the title of Supervising Producer.
Many of the details of "Borderland" and its sequels were spilled by showrunner Manny Coto at a recent UPN press party ( related story).

 StarTrekVoyager.com - Episode: "Enterprise - Cold Station 12"
This episode wasn't bad in my opinion although the battle scenes were short and seemed that Enterprise was far superior over the klingon bird of preys.
IN Borderland If I am not mistake Malik only took command because his brother was leading away from his father’s teachings but this week we can see that Malik himself is trying to push away Soong only to gain the power in his hands and not that of his fathers.
With this plot line it gives Enterprise the clever ability to forget about the eugenics war (It is already in the show’s past so the directors won’t have to worry about it in the future).

Borderland (ENT episode) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Borderland" is the name of the 80th episode from the television series Star Trek: Enterprise.
"Borderland" is also the first episode in a three episode arc that features the highly anticipated return of Brent Spiner( Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation) as the criminal mastermind Dr. Arik Soong, an ancestor of the scientist who created Data.
"Borderland" marks the point in the series history where it had aired more episodes than the parent program, Star Trek: The Original Series, that only ran for 79 installments.

 Borderland (episode) - Memory Alpha
After entering the Borderland on May 17, 2154, the Enterprise is attacked by two Orion interceptors.
While on patrol in the borderland, an area of space between the Klingon Empire and the Orion Syndicate, a Klingon Bird-of-Prey discovers a transport shuttle containing two human bio-signs.
This is the first episode since " Bounty " in which the Xindi are neither seen nor mentioned.

Star Trek: Enterprise Episode Guide - SECTION31.COM
Dialogue is something that Enterprise writers often excel in, and "Borderland" continues that tradition.
The action scenes in "Borderland" were a welcome change, and an improvement over the gratuitousness of "Storm Front".
In conclusion, "Borderland" is more than your average action story, but it's next week's "Cold Station 12" that I hope to address the issues raised in this arc more clearly and effectively.

Star Trek: Enterprise Episode Guide - SECTION31.COM
As an action episode, it was serviceable, but when placed alongside the rest of the arc, it simply cannot compare; except for a few instances, the tightness of the script so prevalent in its predecessors is frustratingly absent, leaving a cobbled-together mess that concludes Enterprise's first 'mini-arc' on a dissatisfying note.
Everything that was bad about "Borderland" and "CS-12" was present here as well, only magnified, and that's sad to see in an episode that could have been so much more.
Where in "Borderland", even the dramatically unnecessary slave market scene was forgivable for being so well-integrated by the writers into the general plotline, "The Augments" comes across as sloppily-written.

The Last Resort: Star Trek: Enterprise
I find this quite a sad thing; I'm one of the few that actually liked ENT from the first episode; I consider it a brilliant move to go back to the beginning of the Saga.
I'd much rather prefer ENT to finish the normal number of seasons, instead of early cancellation.
Eugenia writes in her blog that she disagrees with common idea that Star Trek killed itself due to saturation fo the market.

 Arik Soong
Soong appeared in a three-episode story arc consisting of " Borderland ", " Cold Station 12 ", and "The Augments".
Arik Soong is a fictional geneticist and later cyberneticist, portrayed by Brent Spiner on Star Trek: Enterprise.
It also leaves enough "open" ends to permit an eventual return of the character in subsequent episodes.

 Enterprise review: Azati Prime
But don't you ever forget that the last time Enterprise sustained ANY battle damage that went beyond one episode, it was all magically repaired in the next episode.
But an episode after that is called ''E2'' and brings in what sounds like an identical Enterprise.
As more proof that B&B don't know what they're doing or where they're going with this story-arc, this episode's story was co-created by Manny Coto, who just only joined the show halfway through the season, after the ''story-arc'' had already been in play for ten episodes.

 The Cage - Enpsychlopedia
An episode of Star Trek: Enterprise titled Borderland, broadcast in 29 October 2004, featured the first on-screen appearance of male Orions, 40 years after their species was first mentioned.
The episode was written by Gene Roddenberry and directed by Robert Butler.
Rather than abandon the expensive footage, much of the footage was recycled in the later Star Trek: The Original Series episode " The Menagerie ", a two part episode, which revisited the events of the plot, and made it part of the continuity of the rest of the series.

Ex Astris Scientia - Star Trek Enterprise (ENT) Season 4
The episode was littered with references to Trek history, plus several new terms like "Augments" or "Borderland", and it might have been wiser to limit the scope to just Earth's problem with the remnants of the Eugenics Wars.
Their stay in the Forge slows down the second half of the episode, and while they are not achieving any visible progress the more interesting events take place on Enterprise and on Vulcan.
This loss of intellectual substance is a shortcoming of the episode, along with the overdose of violence, although the latter contributes to the plot in that it divides Soong and his "children".

Archer rightly concludes that even the course they originally took into the Borderland was plotted to elicit the attention of Orion Slavers so Arik could escape in the panic of a rescue attempt before the entire Orion Syndicate swatted the Humans.
Admiral Ross clarified that genetic manipulation is still outlawed and further episodes on the subject saw that most " Augments" were institutionalized and feared.
These events occurring now are approximately three weeks after the events of last episode, the date is May 17 2154.

Murky morality no? Lots of space ships, impressive locations, still dealing with consequences of last week and a 20 year old movie, there's no doubt this was a brilliant episode.
The kids are rotten to the core, but Soong is just trying to make the world better no matter the consequence which honestly makes him a patriot.
If the Augment kids hadn't looked like a Wham cover band it might have gotten a perfect score.

GateWorld Forum - Enterprise- "Cold Station 12"
Cold Station 12 and Borderland are by far the best episodes of Enterprise that we've seen so far.
i dunno, the last episode wasn't too interesting to me. the plot was good, but lately, i feel enterprise is stuck, except for bringing up the idea of soong.
Now, honestly, the first ten minutes or so of this episode felt kinda off to me. Especially that damn crying scene.
