Phony War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Phony War (the Phoney War, in Britain), or in Winston Churchill's words the Twilight War, was a phase in early World War II marked by few military operations in Continental Europe, in the months following the German invasion of Poland.
Although the great powers of Europe had declared war on one another, neither side had yet committed to launching a significant attack, thus there was relatively little fighting on the ground.
A notable event during the Phony War was the Winter War, which started with the Soviet Union's assault on Finland on November 30, 1939.

A good portion of equipment used during the war by Southern forces was captured from the Union during the early battles and that obtained from ordinance stores when the Confederate government seized coastal guns and forts in the opening days of the war.
As the war progressed, however, the quality of the iron declined and the later guns were prone to exploding upon being fired.
For rifled cannon a variety of devices were used to cause either the round itself or its sabot to grip the walls of the bore and impart a stabilizing spin on the ammunition.

Once the war of manoeuvre ended French's mood switched to one of over-optimism, until by Autumn 1915 he was once again reluctant to co-operate with the French and had to be urged into action.

The Most Common Field Pieces Of The Civil War
Howitzers, in any case, had come to be manufactured in the same standard bore sizes as guns, so the "pounder" designation of a particular gun was automatically applied to the howitzer of the same bore size.
The Model 1841 howitzers of the same bore size were therefore called "12pdrs" even though their hollow shells usually weighed less (though, depending on how they were packed, could weigh more) than 12 pounds.
Used extensively during the Mexican War, it was made obsolete by the increased range of the available infantry weapons as much as by the coming of better artillery.

Any cannon with a 3.67-inch bore would use a shot weighing six pounds, and would be known as a six-pounder; a cannon with a 4.62-inch bore would be a 12-pounder.
It was logical to refer to these new guns by their bore diameter, but the life of the military has not been logic, and the creators of these designs tried to give them names that would seem familiar to their users.
Their 3.67-inch bores meant that the weight of their rifled ammunition could be somewhere between two and three times their original nominal weight.

Churchill was a staunch advocate of foreign intervention, declaring that Bolshevism must be "strangled in its cradle." He secured from a divided and loosely organized Cabinet an intensification and prolongation of the British involvement beyond the wishes of any major group in Parliament or the nation—and in the face of the bitter hostility of labour.
Churchill advocated the preemptive occupation of the neutral Norwegian iron ore fields of Narvik early in the War.
The war, and particularly the period between 1940 and 1942 when Britain was fighting alone, was the climax of Churchill's career and his personal account of the inside story of those days is unique and invaluable.

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Willis, Farrell: Fighting the Bore War
Bruce Willis’ role in Hart’s War can be gleaned entirely from looking at the film’s promotional poster; his picturesque army hat, salute and stoic expression rarely leave him during his short time onscreen.
Furthermore, the film’s message about honor and courage is blatantly spelled out; for the moviegoer who might miss the lesson, a voiceover describes how the protagonist is now able to tell his son the true meaning of the words for which he fights.
Although Hart’s War is intended to demonstrate that honor and courage can exist in different forms, what it really shows is that a movie cannot be completely successful if it attempts too many different forms: in this case a war epic, a courtroom drama, a cinematographic masterpiece and a parable.

Back in February, another Populus poll found that only 44 per cent of people asked said that they were certain to vote on 1 May. That was well ahead of the election, before any campaigning had started or consciousness of the campaigns had entered popular perception.
Another theory is that the war simply drove the election off the front pages, and forced the political parties to curtail their campaign.
