Topic: Bore diameter

  Spartanburg SC | GoUpstate.com | Spartanburg Herald-Journal
The Gauge or bore of a shotgun is a unit of measurement used to express the diameter of the barrel.
The gauge or bore of the inside diameter of a barrel corresponds with the number of identical solid spheres that can be made from a pound of lead.
The recoil reduction is due to the larger bore producing a slower acceleration of the shot, and the patterning improvements are due to the larger muzzle diameter for the same choke constriction, which results in less shot deformation.

Machine tool with bore diameter measuring apparatus and tool position compensating apparatus - Patent 4400118
As a consequence, in order to measure the machined bore, the measuring device has to be inserted into the tool spindle through the aid of an automatic tool change device, and after measurement of the machined bore, the measuring device is exchanged for the boring tool by means of the automatic tool change device.
Furthermore, misalignment between the boring tool during trial boring and during finish boring is caused as a result of the automatic tool change operation, which effects the accuracy of the finished bore.
The manner of measuring a diameter of the machined bore W1 on workpiece W is illustrated in FIG.

Because the bore doesn't match a common inch size falling somewhere between the tolerance ranges for nominal bores of 11 /8 (1.1250) inches and 13 /16 (1.1875) inches it appears to have a non-standard diameter.
For nominal bore diameters between 50-80 mm, the data shows that this coupling is within the allowable +0.030 mm variance.

This index is simply a listing by bore diameter, from smallest to largest, of all the models of cannon employed in the American Civil War.
Boldface headings are inserted to indicate the diameters for those smoothbores using the traditional "pounder" designations.

The CEM’s bore diameter of 0.75 inch with a stroke of 0.75 inch was determined by computational analysis of the overall weight and scale requirements for the engine.
Having a stroke length equivalent to bore diameter (a bore/stroke ratio of 1:1) is the optimum combination for the CEM engine as it creates a maximum torque angle of 26.7 degrees with minimum drive pin stress at the mid point of the cam sleeve ramp.
With each bore of a 6-piston/12-cylinder version located at a 60-degree interval and utilizing the same bore and stroke, a more favorable power-to-weight ratio is achieved simply from an increase in volume with the same engine casing and head dimensions that could be used in a 4-cylinder design.

 .410 bore at AllExperts
The.410 caliber is a bore and not a gauge because the barrel diameter is.410 inches (10.4 mm); a true gauge is a measurement of the number of lead balls of bore diameter that constitute a pound (454 gram).
Some competitive shooters choose the.410 bore because of the challenge it presents;.410 bore guns generally have full chokes to form a tight pattern with the small load of shot, and this makes hitting moving targets very challenging.
Due to the rifled barrel, the assembled firearm is considered a rifle or pistol (depending on barrel length) and thus is not subject to the National Firearms Act 18 inch minimum barrel length.

 Caliber Codes for Shotguns
Shotgun gauges are normally expressed as whole numbers, followed by the word "gauge" or an abbreviation for it, for example 12-gauge or 12-ga. Under the English system of shotgun gauges, the lower the number, the larger the bore diameter.
With the most common shotgun cartridge types, the bore diameter when expressed in decimals of an inch or millimeters is not the same as the gauge.
A 12-gauge's bore diameter is not.12 caliber; nor is it 12 millimeters.

The diameter specific bore heads can be specified for bores from 3 mm to 200 mm.
Conventional workpiece probes use the read-out of the axis-position of the machine to measure values, whereas the Bore Gauge is a complete, machine-independent measuring device in itself, even though it resides within the machine tool.
The Bore Gauge can be mounted in standard tool holders and transferred from the machining center tool magazine to the spindle just like any other tool.

 Targets
The adapter is actually slightly larger than the bore, so when it is inserted in the bore (by pulling on the cord and tipping it forward) and the cord is released, it "jams" in the bore, centering itself.
Subsequent measurement points in the bore are compared to the benchmark and the difference in target readings is the increase or decrease in bore diameter.
To take bore alignment readings, the A-511 is set horizontally to the same side of each bore to be measured and is "zeroed out" using the micrometer.

The first method uses the classic aspect ratio: actual bore length divided by the bore diameter; the typical value used for this ratio is 18.
Based upon recent discussions with Lew, the ratio is implemented in the program as the theoretical bore length divided by the bore diameter squared; the recommended value for this ratio is 24.
The aspect ratio (bore length / bore diameter ^ 2) is calculated according to personal discussions with Lew and differs from that presented in his books.

Brunswick Instrument Chamfer & Countersink Gages Demystified
The easiest method to accurately calibrate or verify calibration of a chamfer diameter gage is with a plain ring gage having sharp edges at the bore openings as illustrated in Figure #4.
As long as the bore edges are sharp, the ring gage bore diameter can be relied upon as a setting standard for chamfer and countersink type gages.
Because we are only concerned with the actual diameter at the extreme top edge of the ring gage bore, a bore gage, which does a nice job of measuring the bore size down inside the ring, cannot be used.

The "bore diameter" is the smallest diameter in your swage die that is subject to pressure.
For straight hole dies, it is the bore size of the die (not necessarily the caliber of the bullet, because core swage dies have much smaller diameters than the caliber).
Point forming dies have the characteristic of a curved bore, so that the smallest point subject to pressure will vary with the length of bullet that you are attempting to form, and whether or not you push the bullet all the way to the tip of the die.
