Boreas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Boreas ("north wind" or "devouring") was the Greek god with that name, one of the Anemoi the Winds, the winged sons of Eos and Aeolus: Eurus the East Wind, Notus the desiccating South Wind, and Zephyrus the gentle West Wind.
Pausanias wrote that Boreas had snakes instead of feet, though in art he was usually depicted with human feet, which were often winged.
Boreas had two sons, two daughters, and twelve mares which are said to be able to run across a field of grain without trampling the plants.

Mythography | The Greek God Boreas in Myth and Art
Boreas was the god of the North Wind in Greek mythology.
It stands to reason that Hesiod would claim that the gods of the winds - Zephyrus, Boreas, and Notus - were descended from the goddess of Dawn and a Titan with a name that means "starry", for the winds could be thought of as coming from the sky.
However, one day Boreas saw her dancing, and struck with desire, he carried off the lovely woman (some versions say he hid her in a cloud) and made her his bride.

 BOREAS
The Boreal Ecosystem - Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) was an intensive remote-sensing and field study in the boreal forests of central Canada during the years 1993 to 1996.
BOREAS investigated exchanges of energy, water, heat, CO2, and trace gases between the boreal forest and the atmosphere.
A common set of existing BOREAS in situ and remote-sensing data from the period 1993-1996 was compiled at point, study area, and regional scales for use by Follow-On investigators.

 Welcome to the BOREAS Project
The Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) is a large-scale international interdisciplinary experiment in the northern boreal forests of Canada.
BOREAS wants to learn to use satellite data to monitor the forests, and to improve computer simulation and weather models so scientists can anticipate the effects of global change.
The large-scale study area for BOREAS is a 1000 x 1000 km area covering most of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada -- called the BOREAS Study Region.

John William Waterhouse: Boreas - 1902 « Paintings
The reappearance of Waterhouse's Boreas in the saleroom in the mid 1990s caused a sensation as it had been lost for 90 years.
Called Boreas after the north wind in Greek mythology, the work shows a young girl in a windswept landscape.
In 1904 the Royal Academy notes described the subject as: "In wind-blown draperies of slate-colour and blue, a girl passes through a spring landscape accented by pink blossom and daffodils".

The project addresses several BOREAS goals, including developing new remote sensing products, improving model links to remote sensing, evaluating the impact of scale, and developing improved algorithms.
While the project focuses on novel applications of remote sensing to boreal forest flux estimation, we expect that these applications will be of broad utility for all ecosystems.
The proposed work will lay a foundation for a new generation of narrow-band sensors that are a planned part of the EOS platform.

EO Study: Mystery of the Missing Carbon
In a concerted effort to solve the mystery of the missing carbon, NASA led an interdisciplinary Boreal Ecosystem-Atmosphere Study (BOREAS) from 1994-97 that spanned two Canadian provinces.
Wofsy, along with members of 85 other science teams from five nations, participated in the investigation.
Named after Boreas, Greek god of the north wind, boreal refers to the mostly evergreen forest that encircles the Earth at high northern latitudes–between 43°N-65°N–occupying between 16 to 20 million square kilometers of the Earth’s land surface.
