The Borinage. Tourist information about the city of Mons in Belgium.
The Borinage is the name of an industrial region in the Belgian province of Hainaut, surrounding Mons and extending to the French border.
The wealth of the entire Borinage depended heavily on this industry, with the apex lying in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The coal is found in five principal basins: the Borinage Basin, the Central Basin, and the Charleroi and Liege basins, which are all located in the Sambre-Meuse valleys, and the Campine Basin, located near the Netherlands border.

Van Gogh, Vincent Willem - MSN Encarta
He taught Sunday school and gave the occasional sermon but was keen to become a minister full-time and so returned to the Netherlands to begin studying for the entrance exam to university, where he was to take up theology.
However, this also left him dissatisfied, and, hoping to find a practical application for his religious beliefs, he became an evangelist in the Borinage, a poor mining district in Belgium.
About 1881, when he was still living in poverty in the Borinage, van Gogh’s interests moved towards art rather than the Church, more so after he visited the painter Jules Breton, who depicted peasants and whom, with Jean-François Millet, van Gogh took as a model.

Van Gogh's Nuenen Church Towers: van Gogh in the Borinage
The time that Vincent van Gogh spent in the Borinage area of Belgium was one of the most intense episodes of his life, and can be recognized as the true turning point in both his art and his religion.
In December of 1878, van Gogh was granted his request, and was given a temporary post as a lay preacher in the village of Wasmes, reaching out with the Gospel to the miners of the Belgian Borinage.
Giving his all to this task, Vincent finally found joy in his work and felt happiness in his operations as “an official servant of God” by visiting the poor, feeding the hungry, and preaching to uplift the souls of the suffering miners and their families (Hanson 47).

Borinage, který byl cenzurou po desetiletí zakázán, je dnes považován za milník politického filmařství.
In 1933, Henri Storck, one of the leading figures of Belgian avant-garde film, asked Joris Ivens to help him make a film about the dire social consequences of a miner’s strike that had taken place in the Borniage region of Belgium the year before.
Considered to be among Ivens’ best works and a milestone of political filmmaking, it was first screened to a hailstorm of criticism directed at Ivens’ leftist sympathies, and even led to his official censorship for a period of time.

From this time he worked at his new `mission' with single-minded frenzy, and although he often suffered from extreme poverty and undernourishment, his output in the ten remaining years of his life was prodigious: about 800 paintings and a similar number of drawings.

The Films > Joris Ivens Retrospective
Co-directed with Belgian filmmaker Henri Storck, this film portrays the painful aftermath of the revolutionary 1932 miners’ strike in the Borinage region.
Moving away from his earlier poetic style, Ivens structured the film as a social critique and staged several scenes as dramatic reenactments of the strike.
Described as having “accusatory aesthetics,” BORINAGE suffered political censorship for many years, but remains an impressive example of Ivens’ early socialist realist style and themes.
