Boris Christoff (Bulgarian: Борис Христов) (May 18, 1914, Plovdiv, Bulgaria – June 28, 1993, Rome, Italy) was a Bulgarian opera singer, one of the greatest basses of the 20th century.
Christoff demonstrated early his singing talent and sang as a boy at the chorus of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia.
Due to a government grant Christoff left in May 1942 for Italy where he was tutored for two years in the core Italian bass repertoire by Riccardo Stracciari.

He was known for roles such as Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, Philip II in Verdi's Don Carlos, Ivan the Terrible in Rimsky-Korsakov's The Maid of Pskov, and the title role in Mefistofele/Mephistopheles by the Italian composer Arrigo Boito (1842–1918).
Christoff was born in Plovdiv, the son of a teacher and keen amateur musician.
When the choir sang at the royal palace, King Boris III was so impressed with Christoff's solo that he arranged a scholarship for him to study in Italy, so Christoff went to Rome in 1942 to study with the baritone Riccardo Stracciari.

Christoff protested cuts in the score, stating that he was left with one third of the role, and that he would not sing unless the cuts were restored.
Boris’ beloved mother died in 1967 and he was allowed to return to Sofia for her funeral.

Many critics prefer Christoff’s earlier assumption of this most taxing of roles, and though he is undoubtedly fresher voiced in 1952, the subtlety of the vocal acting ten years on makes this set very compelling indeed.
Any Boris stands or falls by its central role, and there can be little doubt that Christoff, who had dominated the part since his debut in London in 1949, is as grippingly effective as one could reasonably hope for.
As Christoff himself put it at the time, "The interpretation I have given is substantially the same as before but enriched by the experience of hundreds of performances and by my own artistic maturity".

He accompanied Christoff in the latter’s early visits to the studio and which are to be heard on EMI Références 7 64252 2.
Besotted by Christoff I may be, but I cannot but recognise one of the century’s greatest singing actors portraying each character with full resonant involved interpretation.

His Boris is a huge character, with plenty of wild anger in the second act leading up to the Clock scene, and his Death throes make you want to call for a medic.
If you find Christoff as compelling as I do, this is self-recommending; if not, Abbado leads the original version on Sony ideally, and Karajan's (Decca) Rimsky version has the irresistible Ghiaurov in the title role.

The Boris Godunov was recorded in 1962 with producer René Challan; the intention obviously was to replace EMI's monaural version from a decade earlier, also recorded in Paris, and also featuring Boris Christoff in three roles.
Some of their singing, while to the manner born, seems slightly provincial to me. Apart from Christoff, the performances are competent but only rarely memorable.
This is as much Rimsky-Korsakov's Boris as Mussorgsky's, and I think the opera should end with the Simpleton's lament, not with the death of Boris, as happens here.
