Thread aPa.com -- Music -- Boris Grebenshikov: The Russian Album
As leader of the band Akvarium*, Boris Grebenshikov was one of the primary figures of Soviet era underground rock, and a major definer of the no-tone-shift-forbidden standard that many Ruskii rockers followed in their music.
Boris was transformed into a "perestroika poster boy," and as an artist with a good command of the English language, Grebenshikov was signed to a major label contract with Columbia in 1989.
Boris and his producer were given roughly five weeks from the songwriting stage to the finish, and the forced hurry--coupled with gobs and gobs of unsympathetic late 80s synth--had a large hand in sinking the finished product.

Boris Grebenshikov, Russian Songwriter: A Collection of Songs from Boris Grebenshikov
Grebenshikov has even made a pair of albums for English-speaking audiences along the way, including 1989's "Radio Silence," which had an excellent but overlooked single in its title track.
Where Grebenshikov sings other people's songs, I would have liked to know more about who these people were, what influence they had on Grebenshikov, and why that particular song was chosen for inclusion on this album.
Grebenshikov learned this song from a Russian singer named Alexander Vertinsky, who, according to my friend Irina, put the music for this song to a poem by a famous Russian poet named Nikolai Gumilev.

Art for Amnesty :: Amnesty International :: Boris Grebenshikov
Boris Grebenshikov was born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), USSR, on 27 November 1953.
In 1980 at a music festival in Tbilisi the group was officially banned and Grebenshikov was demonstratively sacked from his job at a research institute and expelled from Komsomol (youth Communist organization, membership of which was de facto compulsory for all young people in the USSR).
Boris Grebenshikov’s appearance at an Amnesty International press conference in Moscow in May 2004, an unusual step for a rock musician in Russia, raised a few eyebrows, but he has remained steadfast in his dedication to Human Rights.

Rock Paper Scissors - Boris Grebenshikov, Russian Songwriter (Naxos World) - Press Release
Boris Grebenshikov—whose first global release, Russian Songwriter, will be issued on Naxos World on February 18, 2003—became the “Darling of Glasnost” during the post-cold war Soviet Rock boom in the USA.
Grebenshikov and his group Akvarium (Aquarium) blasted onto the Leningrad rock scene in 1973, when there were very few “official” groups in the Soviet Union.
Although Boris still performs and records with Akvarium, since 1984 he has periodically taken some time to do solo albums, including the US-released Radio Silence in 1989, when the words of the day were glasnost and perestroika.

This is an article I wrote for a magazine a couple of months ago, about the legendary Russian singer Boris Grebenshikov and his free concert in the Royal Albert Hall in London which took place at the end of May. The article never got published, so here it is...
In the early 1970's Grebenshikov and fellow Leningrader Anatoly Gunitsky founded Aquarium, a "peaceful guerilla" band whose concerts mainly took place in private apartments so as not to attract the attention of the Soviet authorities, and who sometimes had to escape out the window when they did.
During the 90's, Grebenshikov was a frequent visitor to India and Nepal, spending months at a time in Buddhist monasteries, and translating famous Hindu and Buddhist texts into Russian.

Boris Grebenshikov and Aquarium   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Boris Grebenshikov doesn’t bring much of a Russian rock tradition to his songs, but that’s understandable—until he and his band Aquarium began performing in the late ‘70s, the Soviet Union had no rock tradition to draw from.
Most of Grebenshikov’s strongest material was not rock at all, but, rather, softly shimmering passages such as "The Wind," enhanced by wind chimes and his own mannered, lightly accented vocals.
While the thumping keyboards of "The Postcard" and "That Voice Again" didn’t merit Grebenshikov’s overemotional delivery, no apologies were needed for "Radio Silence." Its lyrics describe Grebenshikov’s wish to tell about his country and share his music, and the tense, quick-moving melody renders that an easy request to grant.

Grebenshikov was still unmistakably a rocker -- he'd chopped off most of his hair and dyed the remains blue, the same color as his eyes.
Calling themselves Aquarium, Grebenshikov and a group of friends began performing in apartments and warehouses, sometimes escaping through the window when police came to break things up.
