Tzar Boris II was taken prisoner, brought to Constantinople and deprived of his imperial dignity, and his brother Roman was castrated in public, by way of the crowd's pastime.
The sinister combat he waged against the next emperor Basil II, with a varying success, lasted for a very long time and this was one of the most bloody periods in the history of the Balkans.
In 977, when Boris II was already dead, Samuel offered the throne to the castrate Roman, who had fled from Constantinople.

In the beginning of 966 AD emperor Nicephorus II Phocas undertook a campaign against Bulgaria, but the imperial troops refused to cross the border for, the memory of the Bulgarian landslide victories in the past was still fresh.
Instead of continuing the war with the Russians (three quarters of the Bulgarian territory were still free with all military potential intact), Boris II concluded an anti-Byzantine treaty with Svyatoslav and made him a commander-in-chief of the joint Russo-Bulgarian troops.
The power of Boris II was formal - the uneducated Russian prince had the whole of the country in his full disposition.

 Name Boris
It is interesting that in Bulgaria's medieval history the name Boris could be found very rarely (for example, Tzar Boris II, great-grandson of the saint, and Boris David, a Macedonian boyar of the 11th century).
The name was restored to a new life from the late 18th century on, and only after the birth of the infant, the future Tzar Boris III (1894-1943), an increasing number of people began to give this name to their children.
An example of this is the case of the Hungarian prince Boris (1112-1155), son of the Magyar king from his marriage with Euphtimia, daughter of the Kievan prince Vladimir II Monomach.
