Nothing has been invented -- The War Journalism of Boris Polevoy
Polevoy described how Auschwitz inmates were exterminated, not in gas chambers, but on an electric conveyor belt that electrocuted hundreds of them simultaneously, then dropped their bodies into a flaming blast furnace.
Polevoy also described zinc-covered benches fitted with straps for restraining inmates, on which inmates were beaten to death with truncheons manufactured by the Krupp factory in Dresden.
Polevoy, the son of a physician, although of Jewish heritage, was born "beyond the pale" in Moscow in 1908.

Perhaps we had no right to, for the folklore of Jewish people tends to collect a population of those who are not Jewish at all; yet as far as Polevoy was concerned, we seemed to have it on good authority.
It worked here, and Polevoy answered us with a peculiar German intonation which, as he explained, came from the fact that he had learned his German from Nazi prisoners during the war.

 Prokofiev Recordings
What is most incredible about this "Story of a Real Man" is not just that Aleksei Maresyev was a real Soviet pilot -- a real man, not a fictitious concoction "made for public consumption" -- but the story as outlined above was essentially true.
It's just that Prokof'yev's opera was based on a novel by the journalist Boris Polevoy, which in turn had been based on Polevoy's interview with Maresyev months before the Battle of Kursk.
Seldom if ever is an opera based on fact and even then there are novels which do take reality as their starting-points.

classical music - andante - a new spin on prokofiev's stalinist operas in the former leningrad
This work, the composer's final attempt at a Socialist Realist opera, had been heard on the very same stage in 1948 — and rejected for "formalism" in a notorious "closed audition" during the period of postwar repression known (after Stalin's henchman-for-cultural-affairs) as the Zhdanovshchina.
The Story of a Real Man, for which Prokofiev and his companion Mira Mendelson crafted a libretto based on a patriotic World War II story by the official semi-hack Boris Polevoy, tends to be written off as a pathetic attempt to please the authorities.
Yet with the patina of time casting a nostalgic light on some aspects of Soviet life in local popular culture, and given a score that is in places extremely skillful, one can imagine an intelligent production that could make Story of a Real Man a Mariinsky specialty.
