Borknagar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Borknagar is a progressive metal band from Bergen, Norway founded in 1995 by Øystein Garnes Brun.
The name Borknagar is an anagram of "Ragnarok", with a B thrown in to make it pronounceable (however, Øystein Brun stated once that the name was inspired by a Scottish myth about a man who climbed Loch Nagar, a mountain in Scotland).
Borknagar rose out of the ashes of the Norwegian death metal band Molested when then-member Øystein Brun became tired of the brutal aspects of the band's music.

Borknagar have perhaps never been viking metal persay (they were more of an inventive fl metal band), but with lyrics speaking of ancient times when Odin and his men ruled the world of mortals it still qualifyes in my eyes (ears).

Borknagar's sixth studio opus and second with vocalist Vintersorg, sees both a forward progression and a reversion to their early familiar sound.
The next Borknagar album will be a telling release for the bands future, hopefully with another new vocalist to add some much needed variation and inspiration.

When Borknagar's eponymous debut came out four years ago, it hinted at greater things to come for the Norwegian quintet.
Then, another year later, The Archaic Course showed some signs of wear, many of Borknagar's contemporaries catching up with their progression in the between-album interim, but the album was solid nonetheless, especially when taking into consideration who was sponging whose moves.
Yes, Borknagar, after losing their previous rhythm section (sadly, former drummer Grim committed suicide last year), have either run out of fresh ideas or, more likely, everyone else has not only caught up with the band but has surpassed them -- it's utterly baffling, to say the least.

Borknagar is one of the most successful of the Norwegian fl metal bands and even though the band was formed as late as 1996 they have now released no less than five full-length albums.
This time Borknagar chose to record the album in Norway together with Borge Finstad, resulting in experimentation with a hammond organ, grand piano and authentic strings.
A new era has begun for Borknagar and it will be interesting to hear what musical landscapes we are to be delivered in the future from these Norwegians.

Borknagar was founded in 1995 by guitarist Oystein Brun, who, fresh from his stint in a previous band called Molested, decided to form a new fl metal project, enlisting several major players in the scene.
The band forgoes the simplistic blastbeats and shrieking typical of the early fl metal bands, instead opting for a more majestic fl metal sound ("epic metal" as Brun himself has described the style).
Despite frequent lineup changes, Borknagar's music remains of high quality -- this is one of the better modern post-fl metal bands in the scene today.

Perhaps unceremoniously both bands are lumped with the dreaded ‘fl’ metal label by us, which really is not indicative of the repertoire both Borknagar and Vintersorg hold in their arsenal.
The framework of Borknagar is very present on the upcoming "Empiricism", but I think that the fuse of new members adds bits of different things, the scope has just got wider.
Vintersorg lives out of all contrasts, and Borknagar I may not be the right person to ask as I haven’t written any music on "Empiricism" but I think we work with contrasts there as well.
