Phil Villarreal's Review: Born Yesterday | Arizona Daily Star ®
Film fanatics like to second-guess the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' often questionable choices, but this is one of the cases in which they got it right.
Even in 1950 it was an obvious setup for a melodramatic love triangle, with the audience coarsely manipulated to root for Billie to choose the shy, stouthearted Paul over the the abusive Harry.
Such intense moments build toward the epiphany, in which all the film's forces converge for a shining moment of take-no-guff victory, and Billie finally sheds her pretense of dumbness for a sharp remark that leaves the blathering Harry speechless.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: Born Yesterday (1950)
Born Yesterday is an enchanting, brilliantly executed film.
The movie probably sounds more dismal than it really is. In the case of some scenes, it really is dismal -- I won't muffle the film's occasional horror -- but mostly it's a light, uplifting, and unforgettable comedy, intelligently written and executed.
The film was remade in 1993, and while the remake is good in its own right, it's no match for the original.

 DVDFILE.COM: Born Yesterday (1950) review
The film is presented in it's original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.33:1.
There's very little music in the film, and given the mono recording and the age of the film the music did have that mono-muddiness that is so often the case (particularly in the opening credits), but the dialogue (and there's a lot of it) is absolutely clear throughout.
BORN YESTERDAY is a wonderful film with a not-to-be-missed performance by July Holliday, and the DVD pretty much does it justice, offering a transfer that's a cut above the previous Laserdisc.

The movie is a remake of a 1950 film based on a play by Garson Kanin, about a hard-boiled millionaire who hires a tutor for his brassy mistress, only to realize the girlfriend and the tutor have fallen in love.
I came home after seeing "Born Yesterday" and went straight to the laserdisc of the 1950 movie, directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Holliday as the ditzy mistress (she won an Oscar for the role), Broderick Crawford as the tough guy, and William Holden as the tutor.
The original "Born Yesterday" was a fairly fl comedy already, but it redeemed its dark side with style and energy.

"Born Yesterday" hearkens back to yesteryear, when most female movie characters were mere sex objects who were seen but not heard.
This film may have been made in the '90s, but it has a conservative '50s theme: A woman's place is in the home, with a man by her side.
"Born Yesterday" isn't totally offensive, and its lack of strong profanity and violence is refreshing.

Columbia Pictures held Sterling in high regard and had her test for the 1950 film version of Born Yesterday but she lost the role to the star she replaced in Chicago, Judy Holliday.
In 1950, Sterling was only beginning to hone her craft and would begin finding roles as the hardened tramp or down-on-her-luck sultry dame.
These roles were a staple in the film noir genre and fit her bad girl persona.

She particularly hated the fact that her co-star (whom she clearly detested) was getting better notices, plus she was insisting on major script changes to accommodate her “acting style.” After only a few performances, Kanin received a note from his former friend asking him to permanently replace her.
Born Yesterday had its Broadway premiere at the Lyceum Theatre on February 4, 1946, where it played to sold-out houses for almost four years.

The original 1950 Born Yesterday, directed by George Cukor and starring Judy Holliday, William Holden, and Broderick Crawford, is an occasionally-amusing, but mostly-flat film, and certainly not deserving of this kind of straightforward updating.

Ironically, however, in this once-more-without-feeling remake, sketchily updated to the '90s, Griffith's performance in the not-so-dumb broad role is closer in some ways to Kanin's conception than Holliday's.
Where Holliday was always too sophisticated a butterfly right from the off, Griffith's copycat performance starts dumb - but then never takes wing.
