 Ask an Expert: Bornholm`s Disease
Bornholm`s Disease is one of the names given to Epidemic Pleurodynia.
This is an infectious disease caused by several enteroviruses mainly Cocksakie B. While the name suggests that the pleura is affected (Pleura: Membrane covering the lung and the thoracic cavity and dynia: Pain), it is actually an infection of the muscles.
Given the innocuous and transitory character of the disease, and the absence of specific treatment, such procedures are not performed in regular clinical practice, only within research settings.

Most often, their namesakes discovered or described the disease, while occasionally the disease is named after the first patient described (Christmas disease) or the place where it was first identified (Bornholm disease).
The proliferation of eponyms in medicine is partly due to the fact that until recently the exact cause of many diseases was a mystery.
Many sources now agree that an apostrophe should be used if the disease is named after the patient, and no apostrophe if the disease is named after the physician (for example, Down syndrome).

I was diagnosed with this disease when I was 14 years old.
I went into the hospital and unfortuantely I was one of the rare ones to get other coxackie "b" viruses along with the bornholm causing coxackie, and I also developed the rare side effect of fibrinous pleuritis.
There is not much out there regarding the disease, but the little bit out there is a little more reassurance that somebody has been there too.

However, in sporadic cases or in the early stages of an epidemic, the disease may be mistaken for spontaneous pneumothorax, acute appendicitis, pancreatitis, costochondritis, a perforated viscus, an influenza-like respiratory infection, or MI.
