Boromir seems a bit tyrannical at times, but it may be that he was simply being himself -- a leader of men, making decisions swiftly and reasonably (within the bounds of his experience).
Boromir's flaws are a reflection of the flaws of the Stewards.
Generations of sons of Stewards must have asked the same question, time and again: "Why are we not the kings, if we rule the land?" The ancient oath of office, whereby the Steward takes up rule of the land "until the king returns", suddenly rings true in Boromir's ears.

 Boromir of Gondor
Given the travel itinerary, Boromir had it finished and stuck to only informing her of the birth in the event it had fallen into the wrong hands, for the letter would likely be trailing just behind her all the way to Dol Amroth...
Boromir had people coming and going out of the meeting chambers of the Stewards, enlisting some soldierly help and sending out requisitions for "building materials." Of course, those "building materials" might be labeled "explosive" but beggars should not be choosers.
Boromir thought on that still, even as he sat at the desk that was once their father's, and took a rare moment to write out his thoughts in a very neglected journal.

Boromir, born in T.A. 2978, son of Denethor II, Steward of Gondor, is a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.
He was named after the 11th Steward of Gondor who repulsed orc’s attack on the Ithilien lands in T.A. He always wanted to become a great warrior and, therefore, learned the art of fencing as well as the military theory.
Thus, Boromir is one of the causes of the Breaking of the Fellowship.

The Men Who Would Be Steward
Guardianship is the mark of the Stewards of Gondor.
The Frankish Major Domos were in some ways like Tolkien's stewards, in that they governed Frankish nations in the names of their kings, but the Major Domos eventually became kings.
The term "Steward", on the other hand, is a good, old-fashioned Anglo-Saxon word for "sty warden", the guardian of the animal compound.
