Its flights were fl and its barbs were made of steel, and it took its name from a mark of red painted on the arrow's tip.
The origins of the tradition of the Red Arrow are obscure, but it seems to date back to the time of Borondir, who rode north from Gondor to summon aid from the ancestors of the Rohirrim, the Éothéod, in III 2509.
Borondir was one of six messengers, the only one of the six to escape the orc-arrows of Dol Guldur, and the fl feathers of the Red Arrow perhaps commemorate this feat by representing the arrows of the Orcs.

As it drew southward and passed by southern Mirkwood (below the great East Bight), which was now infested by the Balchoth, still there was no sign of men, in force or in scouting parties, to bar their road or to spy upon their coming.
In part this was due to events unknown to them, which had come to pass since Borondir set out; but other powers also were at work.

He at last fell on the Field of Celebrant defending his lord, Cirion.' This only makes sense if Eorl's men were moving NORTH over the Limlight to reach Cirion's position, which was north of the Limlight.

 Celebrant Field
Cirion did not know if any of the six messengers he had sent to the far north had even reached the Éothéod and their chieftain, Eorl the Young.
Eorl the Young -- wise for his twenty-and-five years -- had felt that to refuse aid to his kinsfolk in Gondor would be very short-sighted: since in the future after destroying the southern kingdom, Sauron would turn his wrath upon the north, and then the Éothéod would stand alone without hope.
So he quickly mustered the full strength of his people and with Borondir at his right side to scout for the host Eorl took the warpath into the south.
