Bosaso (Somali: Boosaaso; Arabic: بوساسو‎ Bawsāsū), formerly Bender Cassim (Somali: Bender Qaasim), is the fourth largest city in Somalia and the main port of Somalia since the start of the Somali Civil War in 1991.
Situated on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden (49°30' E and 11°30' N) at the estuary of Baalade Wadi, it is the de facto capital of the Bari region (gobolka) in the autonomous republic of Puntland.
Bosaso is inhabited by a number of tribes, the largest being the Harti.

NAIROBI, 7 August (IRIN) - Bosaso, the commercial capital of the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, in northeastern Somalia, is returning to normal a day after forces loyal to Colonel Abdullahi Yusuf were routed and forced out of the town by forces loyal to the "acting president", Yusuf Haji Nur, local sources told IRIN.
Somali political sources told IRIN that the failed attack on Bosaso was an attempt by Abdullahi Yusuf to regain "by military means what he had lost politically".
"Bosaso is the cash cow of the region", and without the money from the port, which serves almost all of southern Somalia, Abdullahi Yusuf would have difficulty in paying his forces, local sources told IRIN.

NAIROBI, 25 May 2005 (IRIN) - Two journalists arrested by the authorities in the self-declared autonomous region of Puntland, in northeastern Somalia, have been released, a local journalist told IRIN on Wednesday.
On Tuesday evening, Moulid Haji Abdi and Mahmud Abdirahman Rod, director and programme manager of the Somali Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) radio in Bosaso, were "picked up by officers of the Puntland Intelligence Service (PIS)" said Muhammad Said Kashawito, of the Bosaso-based Midnimo radio station.
The journalists were reportedly released on Wednesday without being charged.
