In the 70's Grand Funk Railroad was shunned by the critics because of their simple bluesy rock sound, but they won acclaim where it matters most....with the people.
A double live CD on Capitol records, BOSNIA is a collection of classic Funk tunes including guest artists Peter Frampton, Alto Reed (sax player from the Silver Bullet Band), and Paul Shaffer conducting a 40 piece orchestra.
Comparing this to the band's 2 other live ventures "Live Album" and "Caught in the Act", BOSNIA really shines with quality and is no doubt the best of the lot.

This album is dedicated to the memory if Irfan Ljubijankic who sadly died towards the end of the Bosnian war in 1995 when the helicopter he was flying in was shot down by a Serb rocket.
We hope it is a just tribute to the people of Bosnia and their courageous defense of their country, faith and culture against terrible odds.

The best thing about "Bosnia" is that it was almost a carbon copy of this concert, minus the orchestra but they were able to imitate these sounds with the keyboards on stage.
Still I like the first "Live" album feel, as I do on most of the songs that were on that album.
It is better then the groups' 2nd live album, "Caught in the Act" which lopped off songs and shortened them (produced during the hey day of 8 tracks which tended to have faded songs as it switched tracks.) Still, if you're looking for the GFR hits live, this is the one you want.

To these ears, their 1974 live album, Caught in the Act remains one of the best live albums ever recorded.
Out of all the songs included on Bosnia, the one I anticipated the most is "Loneliness." The studio version featured an orchestral arrangement, and now we finally have a live version to compare it to.
Bosnia is required listening for any Grand Funk fan.

Whilst it was still a good album, it lacked the excitement and songwriting of the debut album, and the band seem to fade into obscurity.The line-up of Kraft, O'Neill, Baldwin and Bloomfield returned in the 90's and released a great live album.
Martin appeared on two further albums, "Headless Cross" in 1989 and "Tyr" in 1990 (as did new drummer, the famous Cozy Powell), before he was replaced by the returning Dio for the "Dehumanizer" album in 1992.

Shinin' On was the second album that studio wizard (and a true star) Todd Rundgren produced.
As for the aforementioned All the Girls in the World Beware!!!, this is probably the one Grand Funk album that doesn't stand up to the test of time.
The only things missing here are the lyrics (which were on the album's original inner sleeve), and a copy of the original artwork would've been cool, too.
