It is located between Foča, Sokolac and Višegrad, and is administratively part of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the center of the Bosnian Podrinje Canton.
During the 1990s Bosnian war, Goražde was a Bosniak enclave surrounded and besieged by the Bosnian Serbs.
In the end it was to become the only town in eastern Bosnia not to be ethnically cleansed by the Serbs in that region.

Cantons are provincial units used in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Bosnian cantons were created by the Bosniak-Croat Accords in 1994, and their boundaries were defined by the Dayton Accords in 1995.
Five of the cantons (Una-Sana, Tuzla, Zenica-Doboj, Bosnian Podrinje, and Sarajevo) are Bosniak cantons, three (Posavina, West Herzegovina, and West Bosnia) are Croat cantons, and two (Central Bosnia and Herzeg-Neretva) are 'ethnically mixed', meaning there are special legislative procedures for protection of the constituent ethnic groups.

According to the unconfirmed information, these two people from Prijedor were stopped by a police patrol, and when asked where they were heading, they allegedly said that they were going to kill Del Ponte.
