Throughout the year the Bosque is host to meetings, seminars, international film crews, tours, visits by groups of school children and, in November, the Festival of the Cranes.

 Bosque Hydrology Group
The bosque of the Middle Rio Grande is a composite of native vegetation including cottonwood and willow trees, and non native vegetation including salt cedar and Russian olive trees.
The native plant and animal communities associated with the bosque evolved and adapted to a Rio Grande that overbanked annually and, at a 5 to 10 year recurrence, witnessed major floods.
It is projected in the Bosque Biological Management Plan that if key components of physical processes are not returned to the Middle Rio Grande, the bosque will deteriorate and in many places be extirpated within the next 50 years.

It was in the year 1721 that members of a Spanish expedition, camped on the banks of the Brazos River near its' confluence with a major tributary, named the tributary "Bosque" meaning "woodsy" because of the dense woods around the junction of the two streams.
The first pioneers to come into Bosque Territory, mostly of English, Scotch-Irish descent, were descendants of generations of pioneers who, on successive frontiers from the Atlantic toward the interior, had cut and burned the forest, fought the Indians and pushed forward the line of civilization.
Bosque County, taking its' name from the Bosque River, was created from McLennan County by an act of the Texas State Legislature on February 4, 1854.

Bosque is located about a 20 minute drive south of Socorro N.M. The town of Socorro is a 90 minute drive south of Albuquerque, the closest major airport.
I went to Bosque with a preconceived mental image for a shot that had a flight of cranes in silhouette.
Just realize that once you've been out in the field without one, and then recognize the shots that "might have been", you'll be visiting your bank manager looking for a loan and wondering how to justify the expense to your spouse.

Much of the bosque within the refuge is now irrigated occasionally to mimic floods, and managers plant corn and other crops to feed the flocks of birds that winter here.
The bosque can be a rallying point for urban and rural residents, and for farmers and environmentalists, but recent history shows that its power as an icon may not be enough to move the entrenched bureaucracy on the Middle Rio Grande.
In the meantime, the bosque is in the hands of the people who live and work along the Rio Grande, many of whom are looking to the pueblos for progress.

Meridian, the county seat of Bosque County, is on the North Bosque River, the Santa Fe rail line, and State highways 6, 22, 144, and 174, forty-seven miles northwest of Waco near the center of the county.
The ninety-eighth meridian, however, passes through only a tiny portion of the northwestern corner of Bosque County; nonetheless, the most likely explanation is that the commissioners believed their town lay near a meridian.
The Bosque County Bank opened in 1884 and became the First National in 1889; this institution merged with a rival Farmers State Bank about 1927, and in 1969 the bank was again named the Bosque County Bank.

This past year, members of the Bosque Bassoon Band performed for the Quintet Invitational at the University of New Mexico and at Kammermusick in Santa Fe.

Corrales Bosque is a cool, peaceful, and really beautiful deciduous forest along the banks of the “big river.” The preserve gives an intimate look at an unusual riparian habitat that used to range all along the Rio Grande.
The dominant tree of this river woodland is the Rio Grande cottonwood, which depends upon intermittent flooding to germinate and disperse its seeds.
