The rebels, led by Ka Paston Manggubat of the New People's Army's Ruperto Tuyoc Command, held Sgt. Ramiro Lawas of the First Scout Ranger Regiment for 14 months before finally deciding to hand him over to Duterte and Alforque in an undisclosed area in Compostela Valley.
Lawas was captured on April 4, 2002 when heavily armed NPA rebels ambushed a military convoy in Barangay Nabunga in Boston town, Davao Oriental province.

A SCOUT Ranger held prisoner of war by the Merardo Arce Command of the New People's Army for 14 months was released to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte somewhere in Davao Oriental at 4:20 p.m.
Ramiro G. Lawas of the Army's 60th Infantry Battalion was released from the NPA's Camp for Administration of Detainees (CAD) and delivered to Duterte and representatives of the International Committee of Red Cross.
He said that as early as May 2002, he learned from his captors that he would be released in June.
