With 'Boston, it wasn't as much a matter of the material being imitative (the bulk of it being 5-7 years old anyway) as it was the arrangements.
Boston found, as they toured, that they were, in fact, very well known, but as a band, not unique personalities.
Boston has ignored both these rules, but with the sound reasoning faculties of the M.I.T. graduate (complete with slide rule) he is, Tom Scholz points out the illogic of the current system, as he sees it.

 Boston Album Review
The record company wanted an album released quickly to capitalise on the success of the debut album while Scholz wanted to spend as much time as he thought necessary to perfect the album.
By this time most of the members of the band from the first two albums had long since departed and some of them were involved in court battles with Scholz as well.
An excellent greatest hits compilation of Boston was released in 1997 and I recommend this as a summary of Boston's musical output.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Walk On - Boston at Epinions.com
Boston's 4th album, Walk On, would take even longer to complete, a full 8 years, and by that time Tom Scholz, guitarist, keyboardist, and producer, was the only man left from the original lineup, even golden-voiced vocalist Brad Delp lost paitence.
But these albums are quite different, 'Amanda' set the stage for an album full of softer, introspective ballads, and 'I Need Your Love' delievers foresight into an album full of driving, up-beat rock that tries it's darndest to be reminiscent of Boston's first 2 albums.
As for the rest of the album, it doesn't deviate from course much, the only 'real' ballad is 'Living For You', which is a very good song and the only one off of this album to garner any remote hint of radio airplay.

With his lawsuits threatening to outnumber his album releases, Boston leader Tom Scholz has revved up the litigation machine again and is suing his label, Artemis Records, for more than $4 million.
Scholz filed suit in New York on Tuesday, claiming that the band's first album in eight years, 2002's Corporate America, failed to take off because the label didn't promote it properly, despite promises that Boston's fifth album would be a priority.
He won the suit against CBS in 1990, but lost another case and was ordered to pay more than $1.5 million to former manager Paul Ahern, who claimed he was owed royalties; in 1996, Scholz won an appeal and the case was sent back for re-trial.

Where the band's later records were hardly worthy of note, Boston pulls together classic after classic: "More Than a Feeling," "Peace of Mind," "Hitch a Ride." The pseudo-cosmic ambience invites scoffs as the year 2000 approaches, but it's really just part of the disc's charm.

The one thing that most reviews do fairly mention about this album is that it has a slightly more serious feeling to it, evident in the songs "A Man I'll Never Be" and "Used To Bad News." However, two somber songs hardly make this a depressing album.

It's the most intimate album the Pumpkins have ever made and also the prettiest, a parade of swooning melodies and gentle, unfolding nocturnes.
In some ways, the album's more confiding tone can be viewed as a response to the departure of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, whose splashy, storm-trooping way with a backbeat helped turn the Pumpkins into the altrock version of a fabulously overwrought muscle car.
